Changing baby formula

lilcleoo · 24/10/2021 10:46

My baby cries a lot and I am trying different things to help sooth them. I am considering trying a new baby formula to see if this helps sooth him. He is currently on hipp organic. Can I change formulas? And if so how? Any recommendations to help a suspected colic baby are welcomed.

Thank you all

You can change the formula whenever you like. Which one were you thinking of trying?

lilcleoo · 25/10/2021 11:23

Hello, he is currently on hipp but was considering trying aptamil, they have a comfort one which has good reviews from what I've seen but wasn't sure how to swap or if it's worth it. He just has bad gas which I can't seem to easy for him.

If it's gas have you tried putting Dentinox in his bottle before you swap formulas?

Have you tried the Tiger in the Tree Hold as well?

Sometimes walking around with them in a sling can help too Thanks

Rosesareyellow · 25/10/2021 11:37

Just change it. My DS usually had the Mamia formula from Aldi but we also used aptamil ready made for trips out or cow and gate if we had to get some from a different shop. Didn’t seem to bother him. So changing from one to another shouldn’t be a problem.
Colic bottles can be helpful. MAM are recommended if you don’t already use these.

lilcleoo · 25/10/2021 12:12

Thank you both. I have switched to the maam bottles and using infacol. Will try that hold and walking around with baby carrier. He does like to be held in the evenings but hours on end isn't practical for us, will definitely try the carrier for this.

Haven't heard or dentinox, is it the same as infacol?

Thank you

Yes Dentinox Colic Drops are similar to Infacol but I think it's easier to use and for us have worker better.

If you've got a baby carrier, have a look at a nice stretchy sling instead. They are often more comforting for the baby and easier to put on. There are Sling Libraries in many areas where you can try them out.

How old is your LO? It's quite normal to be fussy in the evening and want holding.

Is he getting enough naps in the day?

StarfishDish · 25/10/2021 14:32

@lilcleoo Aptamil is the same as Cow and Gate but Cow and Gate is much cheaper Smile

PanicBuyingSprouts · 25/10/2021 14:37

*worked

lilcleoo · 25/10/2021 14:40

Ah thank you, will look in to this

How are things today @lilcleoo?

lilcleoo · 26/10/2021 10:35

Thank you for your message. Not better, still very uncomfortable, he kicks out a lot with his legs and goes red in face. He has been throwing his milk up now. Don't know if colic or reflux or if it's the infacol, milk or all the above. So hard to tell! He did like the tiger in tree hold though, definitely eased him off.

Has anyone mentioned the possibility of CMPA causing the symptoms?

lilcleoo · 26/10/2021 12:47

@PanicBuyingSprouts ah no! I hadn't heard of this, I have been managing it myself. LO is only 5 weeks old and not under midwife anymore since the above symptoms started. Would you suggest a doctors appointment or call midwife support line? Definitely ticks a lot of those boxes

PanicBuyingSprouts · 26/10/2021 12:55

If he's ticking a lot of those boxes I'd book an appointment with your GP. If you can, print off the article and take it with you Thanks

It might be worth trying colief drops. Our HV suggested that or infacol but we stuck with infacol as colief is a pain to administer if breastfeeding. Dentinox and infacol are v similar active ingredient, colief is a bit different.

Twizbe · 27/10/2021 09:14

Is it happening in the evening a lot?

There's a thing called witching hours that many newborns go through (both mine did)

They'd scream and cry every evening between 7pm and 9pm. It started around 3/4 weeks and continued to around 3/4 months.

It's nothing to be concerned about and very normal.

What helped me was eating before it started and then just settling on the sofa with them watching telly with the lights low. My son had a dummy which helped a bit but my daughter just needed to feed through it.

It passes though

Hi, I've been combi feeding our baby girl and in the last couple of days we have given her a few bottles of formula and have used Kendamil (I was just giving her EBM initially in the bottles alongside breastfeeding), and she has settled really well on this. It is natural and has no nasties in it. Reviews are all really good too xx
