DD is 31/2 months but she's been posseting alot especially after her first immunisation. She weight 2.69kgs Am only breastfeeding but her weght gain was low for 3 weeks says HV. Should i introduce bottle to gain more weight? any advise! DD is very alert and everything else seems ok HV is reluctant to advise introducing bottle. Is she getting enough from breasfeeding? sometimes she's reluctant to feed.

No don't introduce a bottle ..it will not help her gain weight .. breastfeeding is best (unless you want to start giving formula in which case wait a few more weeks)

Posseting is just IMHO a natural response to tummy being full .. the muscle at the top isn't that strong so as soon as they're vertical again if the tummy is full then a little of it comes up

How much did she weigh when we she was born and how much did she lose in first week or so

Tiktok will be along soon I'm sure to help reassure

She weighed 5pounds 14oz. dd didn't loose weight but she gained only 6oz in three weeks. she weighs 10p 7oz now.

My twins were really sicky babies and slow to gain weight to start with. I was advised to give a bottle, but decided to carry on breastfeeding. The girls continued to be very sicky babies until they were about a year old, but weight gain did definately improve once I had feeding well established. Please don't introduce a bottle unless it is what you wantxxx

Thanks for the advise. I think I will give dd a chance to enjoy breasfeeding besides she is an individual

Sorry, omo, I don't see the problem.....many babies start to slow down in their weight gain at about this time. In any case, I have just looked at the standard charts and she is maintaining her progress on the centile she started on....why would you give a bottle when there is nothing wrong? I am assuming she is healthy, thriving, smiling, showing you she is contented most of the time, and from what you say, this is indeed the case. Even if she wasn't on the 'right' centile, her overall well-being would be reassuring.

Possetting is not a problem in a healthy, thriving baby.

Hope this reassures you

My DS was on the 50th centile when he was born for both height and weight. He's now on the 75th for both at 8wks and is exclusively BF.

He possets like mad, sometimes in his sleep! He's such a greddy bugger.......

hi - i have a champion possetter as well! 4th baby and this is a completely new one on me. After visits to GP & HV have decided it's one of the joys(?) of motherhood as he has put on almost 4lbs in his 7 weeks but brings back milk after almost everyfeed up to 2 hrs after feeding. Don't think my washing machine knows whats hit it!
Anyone any idea how long i can expect this to go on for? Have tried winding, not winding, keeping upright etc and nothing really seems to work.

Thanks

KathH

Kath - I think it could well go on until his tummy muscles get stronger - i.e to up to 4 months ish. DS was very sicky up until 4 months ish - not only possetting but vomitting up to 3 times per day - but as he was gaining weight nicely, HVs etc were not remotely concerned. best thing you can do is probably try to wind him quite frequently during feeds, and when he is a little bit older, give him plenty of "tummy time" as that helps develop head control/tummy muscles
