That's an extra £4-5 a month to pay out for milk now - I couldn't believe when I walked into Morrisons yesterday - and while walking up the "baby" aisle noticed that SMA (don't know if the others have gone up too!) had gone up from £6.38 to £6.89 in one giant leap...

There's massive global food price inflation at the moment caused by drought, increase in demand from China and the replacement of food crops with biofuels.

Lots of articles on news sites. here's one

Probably good news for farmers at last but a bit scary for the rest of us.

well none of my other weekly shopping stuff has gone up - well not that noticeably anyway!

For some reason, powdered milk seems to have been particularly affected - prices have doubled in a year apparently.

But it may be that SMA are taking advantage - I don't know whether other brands have gone up either.

TheIceQueen · 10/12/2007 19:11

double in a year - no way .....they weren't that much cheaper (than the old price of £6.38) when I FF DS2 3yrs ago!!!

They've even had the cheek to put the follow-on up to the same price as the normal stuff....now I think the "claims" of follow-on milk are all a load of crp. But* - it was cheaper - and you can get boots points on it.....so I was about to make the switch........no sodding point now

It's the wholesale price that's doubled not retail.

It's a worry anyway whatever the cause.

IorekTheRedNosedArmouredBear · 10/12/2007 19:23

Wholesale price of the ingredient I should say, as opposed to retail price of the product.

TheIceQueen · 10/12/2007 19:23

aha - that makes sense - I was wondering why, if the price had double, it (until now) hasn't been that much more expensive to FF DS3 as it was DS2 LOL.

flipping annoying though....and even worse - Boots have put it up to £6.98!!!!

sod the marketing and spin 'unker.......I don't give 2 hoots about that (never have done - we use SMA as it was the first one that DH found in the aisle at 2am when DS2 was 5 days old - and we stuck to it with DS3 as it was what we knew) - I just want it to be affordable.....

Aren't they supposed to gradually reduce their milk intake as they get older........when does the "peak" usually occur (because right now we seem to be on a never ending upward curve - after my worries the other day about him cutting right down on his milk - we're back up to 40-50oz a day...........)

QofQ can you not buy it at your Doctors Surgery. When DS was little it was £4 odd in the supermarket, but you could buy it at the largest surgery in the town at cost (about £3 odd). Ask your HV.

TheIceQueen · 10/12/2007 19:33

I don't know ILIH - but my Dr.s is a good 20-30 minutes walk away - no where near anywhere else I ever go......so it would be a real PITA to keep going up there.....and I'm not sure they'd let me do my "bulk" buy that I usually do would they?? (I tend to buy 8 tins at the start of the month so I hopefully don't have to think about "sh*t I need £6 for milk this week" when it's near the end of the month and money is low)

they stopped allowing you to get reduced price formula from the surgery and there are vouchers you get for your shopping instead (if you are entitled to them) - which of course you could use for formula.
