65mls formula?!

New Mum here, no idea how powder formula works, my 10 day old is to have 65mls every 3 hours, we're combi feeding and this is following midwife feeding plan. Can formula be mixed up to such amount, or does it have to be the standard 30mls to 1 scoop, as over time this seems to be quite wasteful?! Many thanks

It has to be made 1 scoop to 30mls, could you use ready made and weigh 65mls into the bottle?

Gladioli23 · 18/10/2021 17:56

Could you weigh a scoop? Then you could do 2 scoops and 1/6 of a scoop by weight and not waste the remaining 25ml?

E.g a scoop weighs 30g of milk only (made up number). So for 65ml you'd need 65g. Or if they weighed 15g, you'd need 32.5g or whatever?

I had a similar plan. We used the pre-made formula bottles instead of powder.

We used ready made in the early days too, for the first couple of weeks. They have such small amounts so it doesn't work out too expensive.

By the time you add the 2 scoops to 60mls of water it'll probably be at 65 in the bottle anyway.

Combi feeding here too - we used the premade bottles, which are 70ml for cow & gate. You could then just leave a drop in the bottom. When she got a bit bigger, we bought a perfect prep machine, made the min amount and tipped out what we didnt need. Im surprised they've given you such a specific amount though? We were under the hospital infant feeding team for several weeks and they usually gave us a range (eg. 40-60ml, 50-70ml, 60-80ml etc), which was easier to manage.

If you do 2 scoops to 2 oz/60mls then it will come up to about 65mls anyway.

dementedpixie · 18/10/2021 18:09

You cant guarantee they are going to drink that amount anyway. Make up a 2oz feed and see how much they take

You could use ready made, but bare in mind it's shelf life is short once opened.
