Just got off the phone with a friend who had awful SPD in late pregnancy. She had the baby 4 weeks ago and while she is much better she is still in pain and not able to lift her older child etc. Her physio told her 'off the record' that it was unlikely to resolve unless she stopped bf. She is very sad about this as bf had been going well and she was enjoying it. Has anyone else heard this? She has enough on her plate at the moment so I said I would ask around for her.

i was told something similar by a physio (not because of SPD, but because i;d been i na car accident and fell pregnant afterwards and was still getting a lot of pain in my neck, shoulders and back from the whiplasy injury.

he said somehting about a hormone being produced still meant i woulod be in pain whilst i was breastfeeding.

wasnt enough to put me off and i carried on breastfeeding dd3 till she was over 2yrs old.

That's UTTER BOLLOCKS. SPD Is caused by RELAXIN which is the hormone which softens the ligaments in your pelvis and other areas. Breastfeeding stimulates PROLACTIN secretion. The only thing prolactin does is slightly dry up your mucous membranes.

I bet her physio also gave her a bit of wide tubigrip to go over her pelvis 'to help' at some point?

Besides which prolactin is produced whether or not your breastfeed, as a result of pregnancy in the postpartum period (six months I think). It's in lower levels obviously, but come on.....

I thought it sounded odd. So sad talking to her , she said, I should have stopped ages ago but I keep giving her a sneaky feed because its so lovely. And this is after an awful experience bf first time round, so she was so chuffed when it was going well. I didnt get a chance to have a proper chat tonight, not sure what the ratio of bf to ff she is doing is or how easy it would be to go back to fully bf if thats what she wants.

Actually sitting down and resting while bfing is probably good for her SPD!
