Breast biting!

Ooh very painful! Ten month old has one tiny tooth coming through and has started biting me at end of breast feed - she stops and then sinks the fang in! I say No loudly but she cries and I feel mean. I'm starting to dread feeding times but am trying to breastfeed til she's one! Any advice please?

Ooooh this is happening to me too

LO is almost a year old and has 4 teeth, last night he clenched his gums togeher and slowly pulled away from me, so my nipple was being stripped akin to a flex through a wire cutter. At the same time he was looking up at me with his big doey eyes.

It really hurts doesn't it.

I'm contemplating giving up too.

Don't pull her away, pull her close so you cover her nose so she can't breathe. She will immediately let go and cease trying to nibble. NB give her a frozen flannel to chew on instead.

DD did this a few times but a firm 'no' and pulling her really close stopped her. I also started holding her incredibly tightly when she was nursing so she couldn't wrench her neck back and have a good pull!

Yes I've had the stretched nipple syndrome too! Feels like the bad old days of cracked nipples coming back again! Good advice about pulling her close - is it to do with teething do you think? She seems to have a naughty look in her eye when she does it!

LOL - they don't get vindictive for ages yet don't worry. The gleeful look is: 'my teeth are farking sore and I've found a way to get some relief and look, mummy must like it because she makes that funny noise'

Also you can try (and this is only something that I found by some weird coincidence) rubbing some teething gel on their gums first - then if they do bite, your nipples are numbed already. NB this can cause milky seepage because the valves don't turn off so well if you can't feel them but is worth it in the yikes stakes!

Kamillosan is quite good for bitten as well as cracked nips too!

Thanks for that advice - I know she probably doesn't mean it and finds it hilarious when I yelp! I've got some teething gel so I'll rub it all over!

Feel bit guilty I'm worrying about myself if she's suffering now. Tooth seems to be taking ages to come through but no red cheeks, nappy rash or anything yet. I also haven't been able to get a tiny toothbrush in beteween clenched lips to brush the toothy peg!

Infant Nurofen is excellent and don't be afraid to give painkillers, they are very gentle and if you were in pain, you'd want someone to help you.

If you can, if she does it again, say no, in the lowest voice you can. Babies associate high voices with mummy being happy and low voices with mummy being sad/cross.

My DD took four months for some of her teeth to come through from the 'seeing them in the gum' to 'poking out' . She's 11 months and she has four molars to go but that's it. So we've basically been teething since four months.

It does get easier, providing you are prepared to give analgesia and teething gel when necessary.

Good luck.

BTW the red cheeks/nappy rash thing never happens to some babies. DD has never had it. I also clean her teeth with my ultrasonic brush, she hates baby brushes but is intrigued by the noise my brush makes, so we do that.

Fab advice - thanks so much. She'll love the electtric toothbrush! Good luck with your little one too!

No worries, we've done hardcore teething, I know how frustrating it is.

I'm pregnant with number two so I'll be doing it all again soon

MrsJohnCuSackFullOfPresents · 08/12/2007 22:58

oh yes, same here. 9 month old DS has 6 teeth, 2 coming through and I can see at least another 4 just below the surface. He has been teething since her was 4 months. And the biting farking hurts!

thanks for all the good advice WMMC. we are ready to buy shares in Nurofen here

I cheered him up yesterday by holding up pieces of juicy melon that had just been in a very cold fridge to chew.

Ooh frozen grapes -cut in half are the dogs nads in our house when she's very sore.

RoundJohnVirgin · 08/12/2007 23:15

Little blighter still spits out/sicks up lumpy food but i'll try giving her cold things!

There's an American false nail company called Nads!

Best wishes for pregnancy - maybe I should get on the case before I get too used to sleeping at night again!

Just changed my name by the way in an effort to win camcorder!
