Sick after feed (breastfed baby)

Thefaceofboe · 08/10/2021 11:06

If my 2 week old BF baby is sick (curled so proper sick, not spit up), do I try to feed her again if interested? Or should I give her a break?

She’s cluster feeding and is being quite fussy so I do think she’s still hungry.

Always feed on demand at this age x

PlanetTeaTime · 08/10/2021 16:07

Yes yes yes 100% feed on demand

Are you part of any breastfeeding groups? They can be a life saver

There are several on Facebook, there's also La Leche League which is a good online resource but also has meet-ups IRL if that's your thing, KellyMom is also a good online resource

I only say this because I'm conscious that I do see some outdated advice on Mumsnet sometimes

Thanks, I thought so, just didn’t wanna upset her stomach. Been constantly feeding today but she’s still very sicky. Holding her upright definitely helps but as soon as I lay her down she is sick.

I will have a look at some Facebook groups to join Smile kellymom has lots of good info on too so thanks for that!

Make sure you're burping her properly. Failing that, try inclining her cot mattress a bit so she's not fully flat- might be a bit of reflux.

Could be reflux, possibly caused by CMPA. It's less obvious in breastfed babies but still a possibility.
Might not be that, just mentioning it as something to be aware of.
Also consider tongue tie as well, it can cause constant feeding and a bit of reflux, too, as a poor latch means baby can't feed efficiently and can swallow air.
Definitely wind and hold upright after feeds, it helps.

It's super common for them to be quite sicky at that age. If it worries you then do get her checked by your midwife or gp. Otherwise absolutely feed on demand - you're still establishing your supply and also her tummy is teeny tiny still. It's normal for feeding to be every couple of hours around the clock.
I'd echo joining la leche league - there are some online groups running currently with a whatsapp chat and zoom if you're not able to go to a local one in person (west London does this and will accept you from wherever you are).

Yes my baby was like this. It does pass but I still have to have him up on my shoulder for 10 mins after a feed so he doesn't get reflux. He's 6 weeks now. I'd definitely offer, she won't take it if she doesn't want it
