This is really starting to become distressing...

My 3 month old baby will not take from a bottle. She used to, just fine, until a few weeks ago, then just stopped. I have been on here before about this but wasn't so desperate. We are trying every bottle and teat going, every night. Tonight she screamed until she was drenched in sweat. She is now asleep as it was that tiring. I thought she was going to have a fit she was that distressed.

Please, please help somebody...

doubt she would have a seizure.
Has she got thrush?

KristinaM · 06/12/2007 19:18

will she lap from a cup?

EdieMcredie · 06/12/2007 19:18

Well no probably not but that's how it felt at the time.

No she doesn't have thrush, already checked it out.

Sorry have not read any of your previous posts. Did you bf and are expressing into a bottle or have you always ff?

needmorecoffee · 06/12/2007 19:29

just a thought, did it start with her vaccinations?
How is her weight?

harpsichordcarrier · 06/12/2007 19:31

sorry, I don't know why you are needing to give her a bottle.
tbh many bf babies just don't know that they are being offered food and are just upset by having the teat in their mouths.
dd1 never would take a bottle

EdieMcredie · 06/12/2007 19:33

Yes it roughly coincided with her vaccinations. And teething I guess. I breastfeed, always have. Weight is fine, she has always been on 75th/91st centile.

Just stick with one bottle/teat for three days at least and then change if no improvement. Also make sure that that teat is the right flow for her(I've had babies that wouldn't drink but when I changed to bigger nipple it was better).

If she is a bf baby and you're trying to get her to take bottle then it would be better if someone else gave it.

Make sure the milk is quite warm they seem to like this better.

Side track with tv/ sit her in boucy chair to feed/or pram/ anywhere different from the traditional hold.

Keep trying/be consistent/and don't worry if she misses a few feeds babies will not let themselves starve.

I'm a nanny and have looked after three babies that were reluctant to take bottles, worst one was a three month old who could go 10 hours without a bottle during the day and it took six weeks of my persistence to get him to take one.

EdieMcredie · 06/12/2007 19:35

Plus it's not that she doesn't know how to, she always took a bottle just fine. One night my mum had her the whole night.

I don't know your situation so don't understand why it is such a problem that she won't take a bottle?

gomez · 06/12/2007 19:36

Leave it for 3 months and then give her a cup when you start weaning. Never found it worth the effort to fight with them over a bottle. Also all 3 were able to miss the odd feed during the day from 3 months on if I really need to go somewhere on my own for a bit - feed them before you can as soon as you get back and no harm done. (Presuming a couple of hours thou' not the weekend...)

Don't stress this.

EdieMcredie · 06/12/2007 19:36

NannyNZ-I read your other post where you mentioned this baby who would go 10 hours! You obviously have a lot of patience!

EdieMcredie · 06/12/2007 19:38

But there are going to be some occasions when I need to leave her. Surely this is the case for most BFing women?

gomez · 06/12/2007 19:38

before you go of course. Although cross-posted and not a solution for an overnighter.

JingleyJen · 06/12/2007 19:39

Edie - how long do you want to leave her for? as they get a little older they can go for longer between feeds giving you time to go out in the evening / go to the shops during the day.

EdieMcredie · 06/12/2007 19:39

Thanks PT, have tried the MAM bottle. Same thing im afraid. Tried MAM, TT, Dr Brown and NUK.

Maybe I should get a cup...

DD1 would never take a bottle from me - when it was someone else giving it, though, she was fine. Has it only been you trying to do it so far?

gomez · 06/12/2007 19:42

Aye but not taking bottle and leaving them are not connected - unless of course you are talking about overnight. I have fed 3 and left them all for varying durations during the day and evening in particular to go to a movie for example from three months on.

They don't need fed every hour from that age. From when she can sit up start with a doidy cup or basic tommy tippee thing with EBM she will do fine.

EdieMcredie · 06/12/2007 19:42

My work do ill be gone from about 6pm til around midnight, maybe later. She feeds for a long time in the evening so either cannot go or have to get over this.

I do not go out much-infact the last night out I had was about a year ago. I was looking forward to having sometime to myself. Things haven't been easy and it would just be nice that's all..

Silly question but have you ever used a dummy? Has she ever been offered one?

EdieMcredie · 06/12/2007 19:44

My DP has tried, also mum, best friend and MIL. All to no avail! Has been offered a dummy-same thing.
