Some Reassurance Needed Please!

Hi everyone!

I just want some reassurance that my little angel is getting food from me even tho my milk isn't it?

She'll suck her hands, and so i'll put her to my breast and she'll suck for 2 or 3 sucks, have a rest and maybe have another 2 or 3 sucks. Then she'll sleep for a good while. She last fed at about 5ish this morning and i had to really try and wake her at 9.30. She had another couple of sucks at about 11.30 but that's it. Now she's dozing in her moses basket again. I'm just worried that she's not getting enough.

My mw phoned me this morning (not the same one who told me to cap feed) and said that it at this stage she would only be able to take 3 x 5ml teaspoons of colostrum and that whatever she did take was all about quality rather than quantity.

Spose i've just answered my own question there really!!

Sorry to appear silly etc. I've not BF before as DS was in SCBU for 3 weeks at birth and tube fed for at least the first week or so, so i really dont know how much a newborn will feed!!

TIA!!

If she's sleeping and not screaming she's getting enough!

RGPargy · 06/12/2007 12:41

I really hope so!!!!

All fine. Sniff her head for me

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 06/12/2007 12:44

With dd my actual milk as oppose to colostrum didn't come in until day 4 and she was fine.

BahHunkerBug · 06/12/2007 12:45

If you're worried, look at her nappies, look at her skin, look at her eyes (when she opens them!). She'll be peachy, I bet.

RGPargy · 06/12/2007 12:47

Thanx guys.

God don't be embarrassed it's totally normal!

dal21 · 06/12/2007 13:09

hey rgp - congrats on arrival of your dd!

nothing to worry about - as everyone has said....keep an eye on the nappy...she'll be fine.

RGPargy · 06/12/2007 23:18

Had a great 15-20 minute feeding session at 5.30ish tonight. Wonderful! She then passed a massive meconium-esque nappy too (the other two have been quite small). She does tend to have wind tho which she will sometimes wail briefly about but will then pass the wind, which really smells!! When i tried to feed her again, she was back to her 2-3 sucks again.

Assuming this is all normal??

If your milk isn't in yet, then it is very early days.

But it sounds like you're both doing everything that's necessary to get feeding established.

Honestly!

You're doing brilliantly.

Keep her close to you, RG, and that will ensure she has as many opportunities to feed as she wants

(Need to add that 'sleeping and not screaming' are not signs, necessarily, that all is well. Too much sleeping can be the sign of things not being well at all....not saying that is happening here, but it's not a general rule to follow. )

Thanx

I feel quite reassured this morning, despite Ellie screaming the house down last night for about 15 minutes at 3am! We had a lovely long feed this morning (about 20-30 mins) and then she just laid there for a good 45 mins or so just looking at me and looking around. It was a lovely moment. She looked so beautiful!!
