Moving on from formula to normal milk

14th mth old doesn't like any other milk apart from formula. Have tried him on goat's milk (for his eczema) and whole fat milk but he won't drink them. Only likes Aptamil. Know he has to have at least a pint of milk a day. What can i do to encourage him to move from formula to normal milk be it goat's or whole fat ? Is it ok to mix formula with some goat's milk or whole milk so that the formula is slowly diluted ?

from 1 year the minimum is 350mls (approx 12oz) and not all (or any) needs to be in the form of a drink as long as your lo has other sources of the same nutrients e.g. yoghurt, cheese, milk in cereal, in foods, etc. It is also ok to mix the cows/goats milk with formula and then gradually make it less and less formula and more and more cows/goats milk. Luckily neither of my lo's seemed to notice the difference when I swapped them over.

oh my ds was exactly like this - he could spot cows milk from 10 miles away. What we ended up doing was instead of the 9oz of formula we'd make up 8oz and add 1 oz of cows milk. Did this for a few days and then did 7oz formula and 2 oz cows milk and so on. He loves cows milk now - we get though more than 16 pints per week - he must have the hardest bones ever

I can't see a problem mixing formula and cows milk as long as the formula is made up according to the instructionss on the tin

Yes - just dilute it an oz extra a day - did this with mine and they didn';t notice!

i have always been led to believe the minimum was a pint a day as well, has it been changed?

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 04/12/2007 21:24

i thought it was a pint too.

with dd i diluted over a few days/weeks and it worked well. although she doesnt drink milk now at 3yo, but has lots of cheese yoghurt etc.

ds didnt even notice the switch, which is good!!

also thought it was apint..my trio get through at least a 4pt a day and dd2 is still mostly on formula

Babycentre and Food Standards Agency both say 300/350mls:

From one year, milk should still play an important role in your baby's diet, as it provides essential protein, calcium, magnesium and vitamins B12 and B2 (riboflavin). Your baby needs to have a minimum of 350ml (two thirds of a pint) of full-fat cow's milk each day. If he or she becomes reluctant to drink milk, try offering two portions of calcium-rich foods a day. Yoghurt, cheese, tinned mashed sardines, tofu, white bread and chick peas all contain calcium.

Children between the ages of one and three need to consume an average of 350mg of calcium a day. About 300ml full-fat milk (three?fifths of a pint) would provide this.

hiya
my ds3 had this... was on that bloody aptamil follow on stuff, and then the nextmilk up from that, whatevrr it is and wouldnt budge off it. wouldnt touch normal milk. was such a pain. am now racking my brains to know how we finally managed to ditch the bloody stuff now...

i know i tried to blend normal milk with the aptamil and that didnt work. i tried watering it down, and that didnt work. hes v stubborn. he now doesnt drink any milk at all (doh) , but then neither does ds1. just not milk drinkers. ds2 practically lives on the stuff, oddly enough.

no practical advice im afraid, just wanted to say dont stress too much over how many ml's of this or that they are supposed to have... the whole idea of trying to meet such specific targets for each child each day brings me out in hives tbh. unnecessary to be so precise imo.
