REFLU X QUESTION

loopyredangel · 03/12/2007 22:39

I have been gving my little one Infacol with no luck, I thought he was suffering withbad wind but now think my little one is suffering from reflux and that's why nothing is working.
I noticed he foams from the mouth and seems to be in quite a bit of pain when he does this, throwing his head and body back and realyl tensing his tummy and body, but them sometimes he is doubling over and in pain, he has also developed a little cough with it too.
Any ideas, tips and recommendations welcome.

He also won't settle when laid in his moses basket but will sleep soundly when upright!

It's difficult to tell, but I would definitely see your GP about it and make sure they take you seriously re your reflux theory. They'll probably want to try him on Gaviscon (didn't work for my ds but it's usually the first step). If that (or anything else they may advise) doesn't help, you might ask to see a paediatric gastroenterologist.
How old is he?

Oh, you might also want to raise the head end of the basket - put something under the mattress or books under the whole thing.

Hi,

My DS has reflux which probably started to be symptomatic at about 6 weeks. He was in discomfort after feeds and back arched a lot as well as being v pukey. Things settled down after some basic treatment until around 19 weeks when he would scream/cry at the breast, back arch+++ and all feeds became a wrestling match/trauma.

Def see GP and dont be fobbed off- lots of GP's just think its colic.. worried mum etc. See medication bit below.

Generally treatment includes: (but not complete list!)

  1. nothing if baby just vomiting known as a "happy spitter" (obviously not yours)
  2. Basic things like keepng baby upright after feeds, avoiding lying them down just after feeds(mine always pooed while feeding so it would all come out again!)upright can be in a bouncy chair type thingy, on someone or in sling etc. Slings are supposed to be good as they comfort the LO as well but not something that compresses stomach. However difficult when feeding a tiny a lot. Naturopaths suggestion of raising the cot/moses basket mattress is a good one. Eventually my LO would gradually slide to the bottom....

Some people use wedges for LO to sleep on but I have no experience of their usefuless.

Using a dummy can be helpful- I have found it great but of course a bit controversial esp if BF and any feeding probs.

  1. Medication
Thickeners usually Gaviscon infant which is an antacid and a thickener so milk doesnt come up as much. Useful if FF but difficult (not imposs) to give if BF. Helpful for some. It helped for my Lo with his early symptoms. But commonly causes constipation= symptoms like colic.....

Stomach acid supressors Ranitidine(Zantac)/ Omeprazole(Losec)

Domperidone which empties the stomach more quickly and apparently strenghtens the sphincter which keeps the milk down.

Infant Gaviscon can be prescribed by a GP (or some say is available over the counter at chemist)but the others usually have to be under the instruction of a paediatrician as not licensed for use in children.Would recommend trying to get a paeds referral if GP sympathetic.

Sorry to go on a bit could go on all day- looked into this a lot myself.

PS Are you BF or FF?
