Excessive (painful) wind - help please

Hi there, my 6 week old has what seems to be really bad wind for what feels like all day and it seems to have gotten worse over the past few days. It is beginning to really disrupt b/f as we need to stop every few minutes to wind (usual symptoms, crying, arching back etc...). It does take quite a while to get the wind up and the disruption in the middle of the feed does cause tears. Once we finish the feed, I find that every hour or so we need to wind baby again (sorry I haven't figured out the abbreviations yet for baby, husband etc...). We are using gripe water and this does help but often I feel brings on a sickie burp. Does anyone have any advice on how to better burp our wee one or perhaps when they grow out of getting bad wind.
Thx.

Call the NCT bf line 0870 444 8708 - they will have lots of suggestions on making life more easy for your dd.

With my dd it was my diet. Once I cut out caffeine and chocolate and started using baby massage for colic the problem miraculously disappeared - 'Vimala Mclure' Infant Massage - A Handbook for Loving Parents. Has a great section on a routine for colic.
We used gripe water too. Infacol is another one - you can give it before the feed. (Though gripe water worked best for us).
Every baby is different - with ds we had no wind problems at all.As for how long it goes on for varies. I've read alot to say until around three months. However my dd (now 9mths) even now has the odd night where she cries with wind but I have now eliminated that it is cheese in her diet. Gripe water and winding until a resounding burp appears always does the trick (touch wood).
I hope you resolve it soon as I know how I felt about it all.

I found that b/f whilst lying down really helped my dd (now 11 mths old), it's a tip I learnt from another mum who found it worked for her. It's also a great excuse for a lie down (as if you need one)!

That's interesting, nok. I wonder why it works? I breastfeed lying down a lot. (Do I - all night long, or so it seems ..)

I've no idea why it works! Mum and baby both more relaxed??? If asked my "top tip" for living with a new born, it would be to perfect the art of b/f lying down - at least you can do it whilst half (or more!) asleep - as you've obviously discovered! Does yours have any wind troubles?

He farts like a trouper, but very little comes up when I burp him. Doesn't seem bothered by it at all.
