Help with 10 week old feeding

My 10 week old daughter has never been a great feeder. Due to showing signs and not gaining weight the gp thinks possible CMPA and she's now been on aptamil pepti 1 for a week. All was going well, she was feeding properly, sleeping better, more settled, less crying. That was until 2 days ago. Yesterday she only took 10oz of milk. Usual bath and bottle at 8pm. Since then, so in the last 24hrs, she has only drank 7oz of milk. The doctor wanted to see her immediately as she has been very sleepy. Of course she gets active once we got there at 4.30pm. He's not really that bothered that's she's not feeding as she's active and smiling so sent us on our way. The more I think about it the more annoyed I am, with myself mostly as I should have pushed harder. I just don't know what to do next! Any advice?

Hi OP no advice but bumping,

What has your HV said, as sometimes they can be more knowledgeable around certain things. I would contact them ASAP and ask for advice especially if there's been poor weight gain, as surely this is something they'd want to keep an eye on x

Hi, thanks. I've emailed the HV but she's on annual leave so it's been forwarded to the team. I preferred to email rather than call as I know if its written I'll get everything down and not forget something. She's due to be weighed, I'm dreading it 😫

My baby is 15 weeks and has CMPA and has gone through stages of this since we changed her onto similac elecare ( amino acid formula). We tried about 5 different formulas and it made no difference. It's honestly the most worrying thing. Health visitors were baffled. She's dropped from the 75th to 25th centile but has remained there. Hopefully your little one will start picking up her feeds soon. I was told a minimum of 4 wet nappies a day, if not get medical advice. We've ended up in a&e 3 times because of it. Have you eliminated reflux as a cause? The allergy formulas are quite thin and can aggravate reflux which can cause feed refusal. Hand hold because it's the most stressful thing ever.

AlwaysNapTime · 01/09/2021 20:39

Thank you so much for replying. She's dropped from 50th to 9th but seems to be staying there now. We are still seeing wet Nappies and her feeding has actually picked up slightly today. I definitely suspect reflux she's doing a lot of gulping and crying as she does it so will be on the phone to the gp first thing. We have been using carobel but its clearly not stopping the reflux.

She's my 3rd and last baby so was really wanting to treasure and savour these first few months as they fly by so quickly but it's just so hard seeing her this way and I find myself wishing time away to a stage where She's able to say what the problem is.

Have you tried feeding her when she's half asleep? If she has reflux / pain then she could have developed a feeding aversion.

AlwaysNapTime · 01/09/2021 21:31

After reading your reply shouldistop.I did some research on feeding aversion and I think you could be bang on the money there! Unfortunately I'm not seeing anything that tells me how to help her get over this 😕😔

Try to push for some help with reflux if you suspect it.
Feed when she's asleep or at least very drowsy. Do you have an office chair that spins? Sit in the chair holding the baby securely, ask someone to spin it then immediately give the baby the bottle when she's somewhat disoriented.

Walpa64 · 01/09/2021 21:43

@AlwaysNapTime read Rowena Bennett's feeding aversion book.

Walpa64 · 01/09/2021 21:44

But as PP have said. Reflux needs to be sorted first.

Suzi888 · 01/09/2021 21:52

I’d go back to the G.P tomorrow.

My LO would scream from 5pm til around 11pm every night. We never really got to the bottom of it, despite visits to HV, GP, hospital… she just grew out of it. It’s so worrying though. Sad

AlwaysNapTime · 01/09/2021 22:05

I'm taking what everyone is saying on board. Top of my list tomorrow morning is sorting the reflux.

Thank you so much all of you!
