What to wear to breastfeed..??

I know it sounds so trivial but I have no idea what to wear if I breastfeed?
I'm due in 4 weeks and would like to give it a go. But 90% of my wardrobe consists of leggings and long t shirt type tops. I can't stand jeans and in winter I wear long jumpers over leggings. I have images of myself in Costa getting my full stomach out just to breastfeed! I don't want to have to update my whole wardrobe.. what's the secret?

Breast feeding vests under jumpers

rosed1008 · 30/08/2021 11:07

I second that, vests under absolutely everything! That way you can pretty much wear what you like. Also button up dresses are good too. Good luck! X

Vests under everything! Jumper up, vest down. Nothing can be seen. You’ll soon find what works for you OP.

So I could just wear my normal clothes but just put a vest underneath? It's such a silly thing to be thinking about but it's been keeping me awake at night! Haha

I recommend the Facebook group called 'can I breastfeed in it'.

If your tops are stretchy you can often pull them down from the top.

Low cut stretchy tops, or loose tops you can pull up and then buy a load of stretchy but cheap vests from somewhere like Primark/supermarket or the feeding support vests from H&M and then your tummy isn't exposed. If the vests you buy aren't stretchy enough you can cut slits in them for boob access.

Or put a cardigan or shawl over the top of your normal clothes and pull up/down then use cardigan for covering up.

I do breastfeed in about 60-70% of my normal clothes but TBH you get used to considering boob access when clothes shopping and just buy stuff that works. If you like there is a good FB page called "Can I breastfeed in it?" which evaluates high street clothing options (UK based). For sure you don't need to bother with overpriced "nursing tops".

Tops from bshirt were my favourite.

Luckyelephant1 · 30/08/2021 11:32

Buy a couple of oversized shirts/blouses to wear with leggings too. I have a couple in material that doesn't need ironing, so easy to just chuck on, no need to wear anything underneath just undo a couple of buttons to access the boob. So easy and fairly effortlessly fashionable.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 30/08/2021 11:37

For my autumn baby, for the first few months I wore leggings with a soft nursing bra/nursing vest, low necked stretchy long sleeve tops and cardigans, or sometimes a loose shirt. Very easy and comfortable. Uniqlo is a good place to look for low neck thermals that are easy to pull down.

Seeline · 30/08/2021 11:37

I never bothered with vests. By the time you're baby is lying across you, and with a loose top, there is very little to see. I always had a couple of muslins with me which could be draped if necessary, but I rarely needed to. Nursing bras are useful.

RussianSpy101 · 30/08/2021 11:50

@HumDumMum yes that’s exactly what I did and both my boys were breastfed for 10 months.
Just wear your normal clothes with a vest under, really easy.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 30/08/2021 11:53

I used nursing vests as a base for pretty much every outfit. I wore H&M ones. It also works with ordinary stretchy vests that you can just pull down under your boob. You lift your upper top up, unhook or pull the vest down, job done.

SoupDragon · 30/08/2021 11:56

Vests under everything! Jumper up, vest down.

Exactly this. So simple.

Tee20x · 30/08/2021 12:03

I just wear my normal clothes (jeans, tops/jumpers) & lift up the side I am feeding from so that the other side remains covered. Baby's bead blocks majority of the view. With things like dresses I go for ones that can be buttoned down so can open up & with jumpsuits and play suits it's easy enough to slide one arm/boob out.

If I am somewhere more public/busy like a restaurant I might tuck a Muslin under my bra strap & use it as a sort of cover - but can count on one hand the number of times I've been bothered to do this.

shouldistop · 30/08/2021 18:02

The baby is lying across you anyway and if you're out and about you might be sitting behind a table. Or if sitting on a bench I just position my pram in front of me.

Fartymcfart · 30/08/2021 18:09

Yep currently feeding my 4th, just wear a vest under my outfit with something over it.

careerchangeperhaps · 30/08/2021 18:15

Any vest will do - preferably one with a low-ish cut neckline and some kind of stretch in the straps. Wear underneath your normal top or jumper. Then the normal top lifts up, the vest gets pulled down below your boob and hopefully your tummy will be covered by the vest and most of your chest covered by your other top.
Breastfeeding vests either have a slot to poke your boob through or you can unclip the straps. They're quite expensive though and a normal vest does the job.

GallowwayGirl88 · 30/08/2021 18:19

You can’t get tops/ jumpsuits/ dresses designed for breastfeeding. I got some reasonably priced things from boohoo, but I know other places sell them as well.
My plan is to wait and see if I can feed before spending too much money.

GallowwayGirl88 · 30/08/2021 18:19

You can get* Blush

tickledtiger · 31/08/2021 07:33

I wear a stretchy long sleeve low neck top under everything so I can pull that down and pull the outer layer up. That works the best. I’ve wasted £££ on nursing bras I don’t use.
