I breastfed for 18 months. She is the most independant child I have ever met.

belgo · 02/12/2007 14:28

dd1 was bf, and very independant.

dd2 was also bf, and very clingy. Still very clingy six months sice I stopped bfing her.

My mil would probably say a similar thing. I think that the real issue here (or part of the real issue) is that babies that are bf naturally need to be close to their mothers almost all of the time. Either because they are feeding or may need to be fed. This can cause grandmothers in particular to feel a bit left out and make very silly unhelpful comments. They want to cuddle the baby but you naturally get lots of cuddles during the feeding and no one can take your special place.

Also some of the women of our mother's generation didn't bf (for many reasons), so it can make them feel awkward when we make different choices.

It's good to rant though and get it off your chest - better here than not at all.

Er, babies are supposed to be "clingy". They are utterly dependent on their mums and need tons of comfort and reassurance. This notion of babies not needing their mums is a very odd, sad thing.

robinredbreast · 02/12/2007 14:49

yes feel better for my rant already

its bloody hard when anytime anything is "wrong" in anothers eyes at least, you ALWAYS get told it due to bf

robinredbreast - you are right. bfing always gets the blame.

belgo · 02/12/2007 14:51

I mean, bfing always gets the blame even when there isn't actually a problem.
