Calling all CMPA /milk ladder mums

Think we're about to start the milk ladder after a Similac trial. We were on SMA Pro powder prior, but reading around, SMA seems like the worst for little tummies. What milk powder should we go onto when starting with the milk ladder, or should we go back to what we were on before. DD is 17 weeks.

I'm surprised you're doing milk ladder so young.

They told us to not introduce milk until a year old at least.

We were on aptimil pepti one combined with breastfeeding. My son still reacted to the formula but no where near as much as to normal formula.

Spinxsta · 23/08/2021 15:31

Hasn't your dietitian prescribed anything? DD was put on nutramigen but didn't take to it so we put her on oatmilk instead (under dietitian guidance).

A bf cmpa mum. I’m on my second cmpa baby. No milk ladder until 12 months both times

Tee20x · 23/08/2021 15:34

I would consult the dietician for guidance before trying this yourself. In my case, I was told under no circumstances to introduce dairy or follow the milk ladder but that's because DDs allergy is IgE mediated.

Was told that DD would be reviewed at 12m and take it from there.

This will be the milk challenge to confirm the milk allergy. I used the milk baby was on previously, instant reaction, puffy eyes, wheezy etc so back onto hydrolysed milk. We are using Neocate

Petal2021 · 23/08/2021 15:37

Ah maybe I've got too confused with my terminology sorry! I'm though the reintroduction of any milk like going back onto formula was the milk ladder...

OK so to set it out properly, she has been prescribed Allementum (aka Similac) and has been on it for 6 weeks. All her symptoms of CMPA have vanished. We are due to start reintroducing normal cows milk formula (i. E. SMA) a scoop at a time to see how she goes. So just wondering if I should stick with SMA or use something more tummy friendly. She has reflux and silent reflux to.... It's been one hell of a ride....

I was recommended to use the milk baby was on previously. I also had a half used box so saved me buying more which would have had to be thrown out as baby reacted again

Petal2021 · 23/08/2021 15:40

I would consult the dietician for guidance before trying this yourself yes, thank you. I will be messaging this week. She's due to start the milk challenge at the end of the month. I was just wondering if it was the done thing to stick with the previous formula or if it was possible to swap to another more tummy friendly one.

You shouldn't be on the milk ladder at all.

You need to speak to the dietician.

Petal2021 · 23/08/2021 15:43

I'm getting so anxious about it Sad

Hi Petal
Really unusual that you've been asked to do this so early on. As others have advised, speak to the paeds dietician again before doing anything. My DS is turning a year old and I still haven't started it as I don't think he will be ready. Keep us posted x

Twizbe · 23/08/2021 17:59

Tbh, if her symptoms have gone, keep her on the prescription formula and wait to introduce milk at a year.

🤞🏻 she grows out of it. My son hasn't and he's 4 now.

How did the challenge go, we are on day 3 today and are stopping as baby reacting. How long till dairy milk out the system would hope not long as only one bottle this morning....

jubbablub · 01/01/2022 10:09

We were told to go back on old milk as to get the diagnosis (and the prescription) you need to have symptoms. This is new in the NICE guidance which was redeveloped in 2019. My little one was on HiPP originally and we did the milk challenge under dietician guidance at 4 weeks old. She had done two weeks on Aptamil Pepti. We offered the amount of feed in the iMap documents and her symptoms restarted on day two of the challenge, which confirmed the diagnosis. We won’t attempt milk ladder until at least 9 months old.

It depends on how you feed. If you’re BF at all, then obviously you have to stop and start dairy, which can take 2-3 weeks to get out of your system.
