Confused about baby weight loss

DD was born on Sunday weighing 2.975kg ( a week early) and weighed in this morning at 2.710kg. They want to weigh her again on Monday instead of waiting until day 10 which has made me panic that she isnt weighing enough. Midwife said it was fine but was quite abrupt and didn't explain very much to me so I feel a bit in the dark.

Should I be upping her milk intake or topping up with formula over the weekend so she is back up to birth weight by Monday or has she longer to get there??

Shes ebf at the moment but I will top up if needed.

Whats normal for day 5?

It's normal for them to drop some weight after birth and going from 2.9 to 2.7 doesn't seem like that much.

Keep feeding on demand and see what she's like on Monday.

You're doing great.

They do it on percentages. She has dropped nearly 10% which is when they get concerned especially as she is a small initially. They will want to see that she is now gaining when they next weigh her

popcorndiva · 20/08/2021 14:22

Check the back of her red book as they will have written any concerns and the exact percentage lost. I do know of several women that needed to be readmitted to support feeding

Don't worry too much - both my ebf babies lost nearly 10% in the first few days but once my milk came in (day 5 with dc1, day 3 with dc2), they gained it all back plus more very quickly. It's good they monitor weight as if there are any issues you can be supported. I was always told to feed every 3 hours until birth weight had been re-gained, not sure if that's a general rule of thumb or what but seemed to work. Congratulations and good luck!

This happened with my DD, she was 2.5kg so quite little and was weighed lots.
It's usually to see if the weight loss has stopped and they are starting to put weight back on, don't worry is she hasn't put it all back they just want to make sure she isn't continuing to lose weight.
Just keep feeding her - of she's plenty of wet nappies and settled between feeds she's probably getting enough.

Orangemochafrappacino · 20/08/2021 19:45

Thank you. We are changing plenty of nappies (wet and dirty) and she seems to be feeding ok but I'm a FTM and a natural worrier so this has sent me into a bit of a panic!

How was the birth? IV drips can artificially increase birth weight so look like there's been a bigger drop.

Spend this weekend in bed with baby. Topless whenever possible. Feeding on demand for as long as baby needs. Everything else can wait.

Pissinthepottyplease · 20/08/2021 20:11

Are you feeding every 3 hours? Timed from the start of one feed to the start of the next.

addler · 20/08/2021 20:13

She doesn't need to be back at birth weight until 2 weeks old so you've got plenty of time. Sounds like feeding is going well so just keep doing what you're doing and feeding whenever she wants it, and wake her at night if she's sleeping 3 hours or more

PurBal · 20/08/2021 20:16

DS dropped 6% by day 5. They said they would keep a closer eye at 10%. DS weighed 3.9kg at birth so much bigger than you DD and probably lost a similar amount in terms of actually weight. I wouldn’t worry. You’re doing great mama.

Reallyreallyborednow · 20/08/2021 20:19

It’s probably something ridiculous like the m/w are going away for the BH or the unit is shut so they aren’t having a clinic on wednesday Hmm.

If feeding is going well and you are seeing plenty coming out, good colour, wet mucous membranes etc, you’ll be fine.

shouldistop · 20/08/2021 20:32

Feed very regularly. Personally I think the majority of newborns need fed every 2 hours. I wouldn't use formula just now unless you want to mix feed going forward as it will just interfere with your supply.
Don't worry yet. You're doing a great job Thanks

My daughter dropped from 2.9kg to 2.7kg in the first 3 days. She had regained her birth weight by 2 weeks and doubled her weight by 4 months, all EBF. Definitely supplement with formula if they tell you to, formula is fantastic and I’ll fight anyone who shames another parent for using it, but until they tell you to then don’t panic and just listen to what the doctors tell you. Unless you feel too anxious about it all- mental health is a valid reason to add/switch to formula too. Has your milk come in? Mine took 5 days but supply was then good luckily, still bf at 9 months (now on solids too of course). Good luck and congratulations on your baby girl!
