How to wean toddler off squash?

Any advice how to get a toddler to drink water, not squash? Stemmed from DC ending up in a&e with dehydration after refusing to drink any water and was given squash there. Now he wont touch water and will only drink juice. Is it better to go cold turkey and hope he will take it or should I gradually make it weaker?

I'd make it progressively weaker.

I think of your toddler was admitted after refusing, you probably have a bigger issue than just squash.

Why did they initially refuse water?

Any SEN?

Paint69 · 17/08/2021 20:53

@MrsTerryPratchett they don't, it was with a d&v bug. Previously drank water fine.

Ah, in that case gradually weaker.

But also, special, fancy, shiny cup just for water. I find twisty straws are good because you can't get sticky stuff in them.

Weaker and weaker and weaker.

Don't rush it. If you do it gradually enough it may even take a month or more but its a small price to pay if its so gradual he doesn't actually notice.

That's what we did with the bedtime bottle of milk. It actually took about 4 months because I was so gradual but in the end he didn't even notice it was a bottle of pure water.

Also, try ice cubes. The novelty of them rattling around might tempt him to play with a glass of water. And maybe even sip it.

Thanks all! Will give these ideas a go, fingers crossed!

Ha I gave up on this! My 2 drink water fine at preschool /school but refuse it at home. I really tried! But in the end I decided I had bigger fish to fry.

Yourstupidityexhaustsme · 17/08/2021 21:05

Less and less and less

Do it gradually from now until Christmas. Just a tiny bit less than you usually would, if it’s too weak too soon then the fuckers realise.

ISpyCobraKai · 17/08/2021 21:09

Just let them drink squash would be my advice!
I know it's a no no on here, but pretty much everyone I know irl allows it, it's really not a big deal

legalseagull · 17/08/2021 21:10

Another vote for allowing sugar free squash. I really don't see the problem

Paint69 · 17/08/2021 21:21

I'm not 'anti sugar' I'd rather he had sugar than sweeteners anyway, but his nursery has ban on squash. Kids can only bring water.

My squash lovers drink water all day at preschool and school. Can't you just tell your dc squash is for home only?

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/08/2021 21:30

Schools and nurseries don't like it because it's acidic and if it's not sugar free it has sugar. Water or milk are better.

Paulinna · 17/08/2021 21:35

I don’t permit squash. Shocked at the hospital providing it! Make it gradually weaker until its just plain water again.

Sh05 · 17/08/2021 21:43

Make it weaker slowly or do like I did and make one day special just for squash.
So i let DD choose which day, she said Nana's day which is Sunday, she knows Nana always offers her some squash so the rest of the week she accepts just water and Sunday is squash day.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/08/2021 21:45

I’d switch to fruit juice (for the vit c) and water it further and further down.

Paint69 · 18/08/2021 08:43

@Paulinna the body needs sugar when you're dehydrated, I believe that's why he was given it.

Many years ago we had to take dc2 to hospital for another reason and I mentioned that I was concerned as he refused to drink plain water, would only drink squash, albeit very weak. The doctor told me that as long as it's sugar free, weak squash is fine and should present no problem. DC 2 is now 30 and has never had a filling, so clearly, the weak squash did no harm.
