Mastitis - not breastfeeding

Hi all,

I’ve been told I have mastitis by my Dr and have been prescribed 500mg Flucloxacillin.

Bit of background, DD is 7 weeks old and I BF for the first week and have been exclusively giving formula since then. I did stop cold turkey and ended up with a few blocked ducts which I thought I’d massaged out. On Saturday I noticed a really large lump in my lower left breast, quite a bit of swelling and mild redness. I’ve also had a sore throat, headache and a bit of a temperature.

I didn’t know it was possible to get mastitis after this long but I assume we missed one of the blocked ducts and it’s developed into an infection. My question is will the antibiotics get rid of the lump? As I have no supply I’m not able to get Dd to nurse or pump in order to get rid of it and no amount of massaging is doing any good.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated Smile

Oh bless you op I hope you're ok! You're supply continues for a lot longer then you may realise, for example, I stopped feeding my LO from one side around 12 months ago and there's still a supply in that breast now so I'm not overly suprised to hear this. I've had mastitis and it's absolutely vile and can take a while to shift. All you can do is try and remove the blockage. Bath the breast in warm water and massage, whether that's in a bath or over the sink... the warm water will get the milk flowing. Try and do this as often as you can. Soy leitchen suppliments were recommended to me as they thin the milk too so you can taken them to thin what supply you have. Keep the area warm... warm flannel, warm hot water bottle etc etc because that will keep it move. Electrical toothbrush? The vibration is said to shift blockages too! Be conscious about pumping because that can in effect increase the milk supply because your body may think you're wanting to produce again so just hand expressing regularly to keep yourself comfortable. If you're not getting anything, just keep massaging. The blockage may be very small with you having such a low supply so all you can do is keep trying!
I got all the above advice from the infant feeding team!
