have no problems with the breast-feeding but just wondering if DD will need to start drinking water too now that we're moving on to solids (2nd week .. up to breakfast and dinner )

not sure if they 'need' it but I found six months a good time to introduce a cup during mealtimes. Ds1 hardly drank any water, ds2 glugged it down happily.

I did the same - solids at 6 months after exclusive breastfeeding - and took the opportunity to offer a cup of water with meals only. For several months dd showed very little interest, but eventually would start drinking a bit of water at mealtimes.

Oh for those simple days - now she's 2.3 and wants "drink" (=juice) and says "No mummy, water is not a drink, I want drink".

thanks .. so do it so she becomes accustomed to a cup but not because she 'needs' water, is that right?

I always assumed so - at least I didn't worry that ds1 didn't drink much water - just assumed that it was enough to offer it, he would have it if he needed it. I'm sure as they eat more solids and less milk then their need for additional liquid increases, but I would trust her to take what she needs, especially if still being freely bf at this stage.

Totally agree with elliott - I'm like your echo on this thread! Eventually, as their solid intake increases they do need water of course, so it's good to get them in the habit, develop the taste for it etc. But I know a lot of people panic because their baby won't take any water to start with, so they start offering them juices, and then of course the baby never learns to like water. So I would give it a good few months of just water and don't worry about the quantities being drunk. And learning to use a cup is a great skill too.

well pidge, I just wanted to echo your post.

I've observed a lot of friends getting panicky that their babies don't drink water and so offering juice, which of course they drink happily and sometimes get in a real juice habit. I remind myself, if we lived in a time or place where juice wasn't available, they would drink water...so I just try to trust my babies' thirst.
Mind you, ds1 STILL hardly drinks anything at nearly 3, but that's another story!

not getting panicy .. she's my 2nd so am fairly laissez-faire
