Weaning/mastitis

Advice needed mumsnetters.

My boy is almost 14 months and since he turned one & slept through the night and fed less I've had mastitis twice. He generally just feeds morning and night. The second time I got mastitis I couldn't really work out why as I hadn't skipped a feed or feed less off one side. Anyway I'm back to work and have a 4 year old too. The second bout of mastitis has really made me want to end the bf journey as I don't want to go through it again and end up on more antibiotics.

Does anyone have any similar experience or tips. Just not sure how to end breastfeeding as don't want to go cold turkey. Do I drop the morning or evening feed and a few weeks later drop the other? And what do I do if my breasts feel full? Leave them? Cold compress? Or express a bit. Just have no idea.
For information, my little boy drinks cows milk, water and eats well so I'm not worried about that side of things.

Thank you in advance for anything you might be able to contribute that will help!

If you are wanting to stop I'd wait until you're really sure that the Mastitis is completely gone. Sadly lots of GPs don't prescribe a long enough course of antibiotics. Consider upping your iron intake as well as anaemia can increase your risk of mastitis.

But yes, drop one feed then leave it at least 2 weeks and drop the other. I found the morning feed the easiest to drop out of those two. DH got them up and took them straight down for breakfast.

When it came to the bedtime feed I went out for a few nights before bedtime and left them to it. The LOs had a cup of cow's milk and were fine Smile

How are you getting on now @GreeceSNC3105? Hope you're feeling better?

Thanks for the tips! I'm better now, a hot bath and some extra pumping helped to relieve the symptoms. I'll take on board your advice and wait until I feel 100% better. Two weeks also sounds like a good idea, I don't want to rush him into change. I also had no idea about the iron connection, my iron levels aren't always on the high side so maybe that is contributing. Thanks again
