Latch suddenly painful at 10 months

Evening ladies

My 10MO has been teething the last few days and suddenly my right nipple gets really tender whenever she latches on. Is this normal during teething? She has a partially reattached TT so latching has never been great (she is combination fed). I've had thrush in the same breast before and my worst nightmare is that it's the start of another bout of thrush :( the pain is in the initial couple of minutes of feeding and then it's fine for the remainder unless she tries to yank her head back while still latched on. I had some fluconazole left over from the last time and I've taken the initial loading dose but the pain remains. Last time the pain got better soon after the initial dose so I wonder if it's linked to teething.

Please could someone advise if a painful latch is normal during teething?

I have become sore after teething. Especially if dd is comfort feeding as well. I put plenty of lansinoh on and after a few days it was better

Yep normal when teething. My DD is also 10 months old and her latch can get bad, plus she went through phases of biting 😱

Can you get the tongue tie divided again? If it's partially reattached that's probably contributing to the problem.

The best thing I've found for sore nipples is silverette nursing cups, miracle things. And if the latch is very painful you could use nipple shields - Medela are best, just make sure you get the right size (based on nipple size not breast size!)

When my daughter was teething her latch definitely changed, especially at night for some reason. I did find painful some of the time, but I don’t remember it being just on one side - although maybe she was just teething on both sides at the same time! I’d be checking for lumps/redness on the boob and making sure it gets properly emptied just in case.

@Catchmesomezzzzzzz no advice I'm afraid, just wanted to sympathise as I'm still feeding my 14month old and yesterday and today I feel bruised! I think it could be partly to do with time of the month and hormones but equally she is chewing her fingers all the time so we have new teeth on the move too, I'm just hoping they come through and we can get back to normal

Definitely teething, I remember it well, feeding v little in terms of taking in milk but v sore nipples. It was usually a week at a time for me but didn't last much longer and didn't happen too many times.

Thanks all for your responses.
@NameChange30 I saw a lactation consultant a couple of months back about diving the TT again (in order to ditch the formula supplements as DD wasn't getting on with any of them) but she said she wasn't confident it would make a difference at this point, so we decided to leave it.

Update- a part of my nipple is now blanched (vasospasm I think from poor latch?) And I have painful blocked ducts! Been trying to unblock them since last night but no luck. It's become excruciating to feed DD but she doesn't seem that interested anyway D:

It helps to give teething relief before a feed. Ashton & Parsons granules are good. If you want to use something like Anbesol liquid, use it sparingly. Obviously you can also give paracetamol or ibuprofen if baby is suffering with it a lot.

Warm flannel on nipples now might ease things for you now. I found not so interested at same time as I said above. Hope this is start of the end for you.

Catchmesomezzzzzzz · 26/07/2021 16:16

Thanks both. She guzzle down a bottle of formula just fine lol. Blockage is slightly better as I've been putting her to the breast often :)
