Milk bleb?

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 24/07/2021 23:40

I have what I think is a milk bleb on my right nipple. It is white / creamy coloured abs almost in the centre of my nipple but I have had it for weeks. It seems like it's clogged with milk.

When I have tried to release it, I have not managed to and it's painful but when I have left it for a few days it's not painful any more.

Baby is over a month old now so not sure who to mention this to - GP? Health visitor. It doesn't feel urgent but I think it needs to be dealt with.

Does anyone have a similar experience? What I have read online suggests they go fairly quickly and easily but I have had this for weeks.

Kellymom.com has lots of information if you haven't read there yet. But I'd ask your HV too if it's lingering.

This might sound mental, but if it is hurting, a bath with epsom salts, soak breast...and a comb. Comb your breast towards the nipple.

I feel like I've tried all the main things but not a bath yet. Haven't attempted a bath since baby was born (now over a month old).

It does seem like it's not squeezable. I read they can have a thin layer of skin over them and it seems like that

I had similar. A year (!) on I sterilised a needle and popped it.

Pucarbuile · 25/07/2021 14:49

I don't think it's recommended but I slid a sterile needle into the tip sideways to lift the skin and avoid possibly pushing it back towards the duct. I think I applied a warm compress, lifted the skin then fed so baby pulled out whatever was backed up.

I've always just scratched mine off! Probably not advised but it always works. Then dangle feeding to clear the blockage.

I had one that kept reappearing, also with a layer of skin, like yours. They recommend trying to scrape it after a warm shower, but actually I found the best time to do it was seconds after a feed. The baby's warm mouth and intense sucking would often cause it to swell up a little and soften and then I'd pop the tip between finger and thumb nails. It would work everytime. Unfortunately, it would come back again after a few days and I'd do the same again. Eventually it went away all together, but I'd had it for weeks before this time!

How did that go @EssentialHummus?

Baby has been feeding on that side for a while. It feels quite tender so I have checked a couple of times to see if it's cleared but no. It doesn't look rounded or poppable, it's mine of flat or receded. There appears to be some milk coming out of that area.

Fine and not painful, though I still sometimes get some gunk (surely not milk three years on) in the same spot that needs squeezing.

Jsh125 · 26/07/2021 22:58

I had a few of these & definitely remember how painful they could be!
I used to have a shower & gently rub it with a flannnel - it was soft enough not to hurt but rough enough to help it burst & clear. Slapped as much lansinoh on it as I could & off I went!
If they're not painful I guess in theory it's not going to cause a massive issue to leave it. Mine were always sore & uncomfortable so I got rid as soon as I could, didn't seem to have any effect on the baby & her ability to feed.

Have a hot bath and have that boob under the water. Give it a massage with a facecloth with some sunflower oil on it. Feed baby straight after the bath. Hopefully that will help shift it.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 27/07/2021 00:42

Well it is a bit painful but only when I mess with it abs sometimes when baby is feeding. It's not painful all the time. It hurts if I try to squeeze the bleb. It doesn't seem like it will release just with a bit of heat though.

Thinking back I think when I was pregnant I can remember having the start of colostrum abs it was kind of just bits of it dried and then I could pick it off and I think it's from then...
