Periods returned too early?

Hi ladies!

With DD1 my periods stayed away until my daughter self weaned at 2 years. However DD2 is only 11 weeks old and my periods have returned already. SadI was already worried about a low milk supply as my boobs have never felt full even in the early days and even when I get out of the shower I never have that crazy let down of milk I did with DD1. With my periods returning so early is it a sign my milk supply is really low or that DD2 isn't feeding enough? I've been pumping after every feed the past couple of days just incase it's a supply issue to boost it up.

DD2 has a tongue tie and refuses boob if she gets too tired or worked up so I was originally only pumping for her 8pm feed which is the one she always refused breast, or the odd afternoon, evening one where she would overly fuss and push breast away. She also uses a dummy which DD1 never did as she never liked to comfort suckle on me and the dummy helped her fall asleep. If this is a factor making periods returning early? Also I started on the mini pill monday last week as with the dummy I wasn't sure if LAM would be very affective so again, maybe that has something to do with it? As long as it's not an indication my milk is low or baby isn't feeding well that's all I'm worried about 😰 any info or peace of mind would be great. TIA ladies x

I don't think it's an indication that your supply is low, no.

It could be the mini pill, it could be the tt or it could just be one of those things. Are you getting the tt snipped?

I've asked for it snipped but I keep getting told because of c19 they're not doing them unless she drops 2 centile lines and I checked privately and it was £175 😳😳😳 she just flat out doesn't feed off me if shes tired and the GP said to just give her bottles as it was easier for her but I think that's adding to the problem Sad

She needs to get that tie snipped. I'd keep ok with that. Just give a bottle indeed Angry

AnnaSW1 · 23/07/2021 10:44

Mine returned 28 days after giving birth. That's just the way it is sometimes. Nothing to do with supply.

Somethingsnappy · 24/07/2021 12:59

How many bottles does she take OP? If she wasn't taking bottles, is it possible she would drop the 2 centiles required for a TT snip? I think you need to push this further. Not through your GP, who sounds unhelpful, but through local breastfeeding support. Are the bottles you give breastmilk or formula? If formula, then your periods would return sooner than if you were EBF. But if you are giving expressed breastmilk as well as breastfeeding, and your baby is not dropping weight, it certainly doesn't sound like a supply issue. Either way, your periods wouldn't indicate low supply. Your baby's TT however, would prevent milk being extracted from your breasts effectively, and could result in a supply drop. Pumping milk would up your supply again, as would feeding your baby after the TT was sorted (within 2 - 4 weeks anyway, it takes time to relearn to feed).

Same, twice. And for my sister. We both bf both children til well over a year.

Weirdly my youngest sister's periods stayed gone while she was bfing...?

Somethingsnappy · 24/07/2021 13:06

Sorry, just seen you are expressing milk. So if your baby's weight is OK, then she is getting enough breast milk through breastfeeding and the top ups, so your supply sounds fine. But because you are needing to give the bottle top ups, it sounds like your baby's TT does need sorting, as it's very possie your baby would lose weight without them. Definitely push to get it sorted.

AnnaSW1 · 24/07/2021 13:33

@ThisIsSimplyBeyond I'm jealous of your sister! I was so disappointed.

Hi! Sorry for the absence! I didn't get notifications to say people where replying! Well what I've been trying now is nipple shields and she will feed off me if I use the nipple shields so maybe the shields make me feel more like a bottle? I'm not sure I've only just started the last couple of days and that's cut out the expressed milk feeds. I also told my HV I think it really needs assessing with all the restrictions being lifted and she said DD was too old for an assessment at the hospital as they don't do it passed 4 weeks D: so I really pushed again as at the time I was battling to get a feed on me failing most times :( and pumping straight after thats so she would take bottles and it got me to breaking point as my nips where in agony and she says she spoke to her manager and they're going to refer her to another hospital which will asses up to 4 months but I've still not heard back it's been 2 weeks now so I'm going to have to ring again 😰 but at least the nipple shields are working but I've read they should be a temporary fix - thanks ladies for replying

Could you afford to get her seen to privately OP? A TT division costs in the region of £130.

I've been quoted £175, I could go down this route if I get no where with this referral. However it's not ideal... but that's what savings are for!

We've made it 3 days in a row with no bottle and just using the nipple shields instead though so that's amazing as since week 2 I've had to do at least 1 bottle a day Smile

I guess your question is more about feeding than periods, but my period came back at 8 weeks pp despite EBF. He's a right wee chunk so is definitely getting plenty. I had my first vaccine when he was 6 weeks old and wondered if that had given me a sort of fake period since I've read it messed with lots of people's cycles. I've since had another extremely light period at 13 weeks pp, still not quite convinced they're the real thing.

Hope things are improving for you feeding-wise Smile

I'm glad to read other mums periods returned despite EBF when I first researched online it all said periods would stay away whilst baby was EBF and my GP said they would with me EBF and being on the pill so I was just so worried when they came back so quickly. I still haven't ever had that "full" feeling I did with my first but maybe that's just because I can pick up on feeding queues better and I don't get to that full point
