My 9month old wont stop biting me whilst breastfeeding

Help! The last week every time my baby boy attaches to the breast he will bite down really hard and when I tell him no that hurts mummy he giggles. I then take him off the breast for a few minutes and he will cry. After a few minutes I bring him to feed again and the process starts again.

Eventually he will stop and feed but not without me being bitten several if not more times.

Has anyone got any advice or has experienced the same?

Can you use nipple shields? They helped me when my 6 month old did the same!!

My dc only did this while teething so I used to put bonjela or similar on their gums before a feed and they'd stop doing it.

It's really hard not to react but you have to try not to. Stop, say no biting, remove from breast and then resume. They do like it when mummy yelps and screeches.

Thank you I will try using bonjela and see if that makes a difference.

I have been trying my best not to react but sometimes you can’t help but give a Yelp Smile

Thank you for the advice

That was what signalled the beginning of the end of breastfeeding for me. Around 7/8 months old. I wish you all the very best though!

According to another thread you should bite him back!

(Obviously don't - remove, pause and resume feed and repeat. And use lots of cream it really hurts!)

Thank you everyone for the advice.

I really don’t want to have to give up breastfeeding before he’s ready so I’m hoping it’s something we can both get past together.

My DS did this. I would quickly pull him into the breast which would mean he had to open his mouth to gasp for breath, meaning he had to unlatch. The first time, out of instinct, I pulled him away and my nipple nearly came with him!

I recommend the pulling in and a sharp "no DS". It solved the problem for me after a few episodes and I went on to breastfeed for 2.5 yrs.

Good luck!

Pulling them in to the breast is good advice. Hard to remember when your reaction is GET TF OFF ME NOW.

I went on to feed mine for 3+yrs so it definitely wasn't the end. Nursing manners can be taught and if you are consistent, you should be able to nip it in the bud.

I properly screamed once. Ds was nodding off while feeding during teething and bit down as hard as he could. So. Much. Blood.
