Breast feeding routine from birth?

Am having my first DD in December and am planning to breast feed. Want to get her in to a feeding routine from the start and have heard it is bad to feed on demand. Have asked the midwives about this and always feel my appointments are rushed and never come out feeling very informed. Does any know of any good books/websites or have any good advice?

I b/f ds on demand until he was 9mo but had the luxury of being at home. We didn't have any sort of routine and until then, I didn't feel that I needed one. I found it beneficial in as much as if he was whingey, I would feed him and it would soothe him so it worked both ways. IMO, they're not little for long so why deprive them. I found demand feeding worked for both of us and not just him.

I am bfing my 15 wk old, never read any GF or other bf books. I bf on demand and my dd pretty much has the same routine every day. As time goes on you will pick up the cues that she is hungry and feed before the screaming starts but other times you will be busy out and about etc and its when they start crying, you vaguely look at your watch (shock) realise its been 3-4 hours and quickly settle somewhere to feed. Good tip, starbucks has nice comfy chairs to feed in when you are out (plus great caramel macchiato's) better than some uncomfortable chair in a dingey baby change.

yellow, i used the GF routine right from the start and did not have any problems establishing supply. i have friends who are absolutely against the GF routine and did not have any problems establishing supply either. i think more importantly is the type of person you are - if you are more of a routine person, then the GF method may be interesting reading but if you are less of a routine person, it is not worth it as it would just clash with your lifestyle and you will end up being more frustrated by it all then benefit from it.

I believe the NCT (check out their website in your area) have breast feeding support groups which might be a great source of help and advice when you first start as it can be quite hard and I certainly needed encouragement and support in the first few months - especially during the growth spurts when I thought I was just feeding constantly. I am so pleased I persevered and I too fed according to my DS's routine.
