Do you need to Burp a BF newborn?

DS is 1 week old and he’s taken to breastfeeding really well so far, though I am aware it’s very early days.

He quite often feeds to sleep and will stay asleep for a few hours afterwards. If he doesn’t sleep he’ll happily settle in his Moses basket unless he needs changing.

He spits up some milk maybe once a day, generally after my boobs have been a bit too full, I think maybe it just comes a bit quick for him. This hasn’t really been a problem and he doesn’t act like he’s in pain and will happily be lay on his back after a feed.

My DM has been very insistent that we should burp him in between every boob and after every feed. Do you need to burp a newborn if they aren’t showing any signs of discomfort?

I don’t really want to wake a sleeping baby by burping him if he’s content and stays that way until the next feed.

He does do the occasional burp on his own but we have a lot more farts than burps so I guess he gets his wind out that way.

I hardly burped either of mine. Both EBF for 6 months. Would put them over my shoulder and pat their back occasionally, but not much ever happened!

ShinyGreenElephant · 23/06/2021 19:03

I've always burped mine but I have a fairly fast let down so they do have wind. Current baby will always do a massive burp after a feed then fall asleep

Sideofnoreturn · 23/06/2021 19:04

I expected not to have to but I did with both of mine at the start. Mainly at night. I found that they’d feed to sleep on one side and think they had a full tummy but if I burped them after one boob they’d take the other one as well and then sleep longer. I stopped having to do it with both fairly early on - can’t remember but under 3 months.

SamMil · 23/06/2021 19:06

Mine was a farter rather than a burper too, so I gave up after a couple of weeks Smile

choosername1234 · 23/06/2021 19:07

My daughter needed winding between boobs when she was tiny

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 23/06/2021 19:08

Yes

bananamonkey · 23/06/2021 19:09

I just used to put their head against my chest and give them a very gentle squeeze, they weren’t particularly windy though. My mum was obsessed with rubbing and patting their backs for ages.

LissySJ · 23/06/2021 19:11

Yes, I was told in hospital by a few midwives it wasn’t necessary but both my two became uncomfortable and upset if I didn’t.

Heyha · 23/06/2021 19:13

I seem to remember doing a sort of weird tilt up/sit up manoeuvre and a bit of a back rub but not the big over the shoulder thing I thought I'd be doing.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 23/06/2021 19:13

I do in the day - but to be honest at night if she falls asleep feeding then I tend to just put her back in the cot ! It’s fine. She lets me know all about it if she needs to burp

MsChatterbox · 23/06/2021 19:15

Honestly you know your baby. If you start to notice signs of gas then introduce burping. All sounds dandy to me!

Aquamarine1029 · 23/06/2021 19:16

Yes and no. You know your baby and I am sure you can figure out what's best as it goes. Congrats! Everything sounds like it's going brilliantly.

PinkPlantCase · 23/06/2021 19:30

Thanks all, sounds like if he isn’t showing any signs of upset then we’re good to carry on as we are.

My mum really annoyed me earlier by taking him from me when he was asleep and patting him for ages over her shoulder when I asked her not to. He got all annoyed and worked up and had to be fed again to calm down (my poor nipples!). I know I’m probably being PFB about it but I wish she’d just leave him b.

Ds1 didn't need it.
Ds2 did
DS3 does sometimes

Do what works for you

4PawsGood · 23/06/2021 19:51

My mother’s generation seem obsessed with winding babies.

Mine never needed it.

shouldistop · 23/06/2021 20:31

Sometimes mine needed burped and sometimes they didn't.
Just be firm with your mum, that's your baby. Trust your own instincts.

MsChatterbox · 25/06/2021 06:11

That would really frustrate me too! I'm not sure my mum could ever take baby from me to burp if I didn't want her to though maybe I'm a bitch Grin

TensmumT · 25/06/2021 10:16

In the early days my DS used to let out loud burps, if I didn't burp him, he'd burp on his own but would spit out milk at the same time. Now that he's almost 4 months, he doesn't burp as much. Especially at night, he just feeds then goes straight to sleep, and it means I can too!

I always did. Are you sure he’s spitting up and not posseting? It’s normal for bf babies to posset.
PinkPlantCase · 25/06/2021 11:15

@Ozanj what’s posseting?

It just means bringing up small amounts of milk

CaptainBarbossa · 25/06/2021 11:22

DC1 who was EBF I never burped. I didn't realise it was a thing, and it only got taught to me when bottle feeding DC2 breast milk that I should I have been doing it all along!

PinkPlantCase · 25/06/2021 11:24

@Ozanj yes that’s it he’ll just spit up some milk that looks the same as how it went in

OP posts:
Laserbird16 · 25/06/2021 11:27

I didn't. My DC never seemed particular bothered or would self wind from one end or the other!

LoopTheLoops · 25/06/2021 11:28

No I hadn’t 4 and didn’t as didn’t think you needed to
