Very worried about 8 week of EBF daughter.

Hi all, I have an 8 week old daughter who is EBF. We had some latch issues in the beginning with soreness but used nipple shields for a few days then straight back to without with seemingly no issues. However, she lost 4.8% of her birthweight and was slowish to regain it (day 17).

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago and she is constantly fussing at the boob and doesn't seem to be taking a full feed. She also has lots of griping pains even if we wind her lots during and after feeds. She also squirms and arches her back during feeds and cannot sleep on her back so tends to sleep on my chest which I know is not good. Shes had her 6 week check at 7 weeks and had dropped from just above the 25th percentile to just above the 9th. She was 7lb 10oz born and was only 9lb 1oz at week 7.

Lately she cannot sleep in the day, constant crying (dont know if its pain or overtiredness related). We tried everything yesterday 2x walks, a drive, rocking, the sling (she slept for 1 hour in it). By 5:30 she was so tired so I took her up to where her bed is in our room. It took until 10:30 to get her to sleep which involved constant crying (sounded in pain) belly was gurgling, you could hear it it was so loud. I finally got her to sleep and as soon as she was asleep her bottom end exploded with lots of farts and a greenish tinted poo. She is disinterested in feeding and only having short feeds. She went 8 hours overnight with no feeds (2 hours of disinterest and eventually 6 hours sleep). She had a feed at 4am and went back to sleep and a short one this morning about half 6 and has gone back to sleep on me for a bit.

I have been in contact with the infant feeding team for possible posterior tongue tie. But I am away on holiday tomorrow for my sons birthday which is today. I've taken her to the doctors who said to speak to infant feeding team. We ended up ringing 111 last night who said she needed to be seen and booked an apt for 12:30 by which time she had settled and I didn't want to disturb her.

Its been weeks of not sleeping and constant crying, I dont know how to fix it for her.

She also had her jabs on Thursday including the rotavirus and gastroenteritis one.

Does this sound like purely a feeding issue e.g. tongue tie or foremilk/hindmilk imbalance? Or something medical such as a cows milk allergy/intolerance or reflux? Or is this just normal breastfed baby behaviour and will it pass?

I'm beside myself, im barely eating as dont have time as I have spent the last few weeks walking or rocking her and I am worried.

She was such a happy baby, ate, slept and pooped pretty much in that order and never cried. Where has my happy little girl gone?

Would she be happier on formula? Am I doing something wrong? Any advice would be greatly appreciated Sad

@SpringBluebellWoods I've had to ring 111 again as her soft spot has really sunken in Sad.

I honestly have no clue what the matter is but even willing to switch to formula if breastfeeding is making her this ill Sad

I really hope you both get proper help & reassurance soon.

IIRC the sunken soft spot is a sign of dehydration, which would fit with the loose stools. I can't remember what the advice is on giving water at this age, so I'm hopeful someone else can advise on that, or the paramedics get to you soon & can help.

I just wanted to make sure you saw my other comment above re layered food or additives in food, squash or sweets causing stomach upsets. We had this when I was EBF DD & it was foods I ate that were affecting her & cutting those out of my diet cleared up her stomach upsets & what they thought was eczema & bad nappy rash, but was actually Urticaria.

I felt like you that I was poisoning her with my BM. You are sleep deprived & overly emotional & very stressed. It's really bloody hard. Cut yourself some slack. You are not poisoning your baby, but some diet adjustments may well help you both. Once we'd pin pointed her triggers, I managed to EBF my DD to just over 1yr old & despite a seriously rocky ride with her health wise as she didn't stop keeping us on our toes there, she's now a stroppy assed, pretty healthy 18yo & is giving us hell HmmGrin

Flowers OP. I hope things are looking better tonight.

We had slow steady growth (15th percentile) and all the symptoms you described. We started reflux treatment with limited effect.
She got worse after her 3 month jabs which continued until her 4 month jabs when she went horrendous. She screamed for 72h solid! We had a full med overhaul by the paediatrician and I cut of dairy and soya (I had a food diary that linked soya with symptoms so I did both together) we had a quick improvement followed by a decline. We cut more foods out and we have had a steady progress although still go through rough patches

A sunken fontelenell on its own isn't concernimg but getting it checked out it completely the right thing to do also keep an eye on wet nappies.

Since reducing the dairy in my diet she moved from the 15th percentile to the 50th! She's back down to the 25th now she's moving though.
Keep a food diary and an eye on what you replace dairy with definitely avoid increasing the amount of soya in your diet but don't cut out any you already are eating - i.e avoid soya replacements unless you are already using them. About half of cmpa babies also react to soya.

I hope you see some improvements quickly we had a new baby after a week although we have gone through good and bad patches since then.

Hi all, she is following the 9th centile now but me and her dad are short (5ft2, 5ft5) I cut dairy out and didnt really make a difference, I'm really not convinced that it is that if I'm honest and like a previous poster has said I then started eating less because was scared to eat things in case it made her bad and also don't like many dairy free things! Which then has made me feel ill myself Sad. We had a few good days but still some really bad days as well. She is not a happy bunny today, slept for no more than half an hour since 7am this morning. Woke up from a happy deep sleep screaming. Soft spot sunken again, no diarrhea and her poos have been fine. I don't understand what is going on tbh and its making me want to give up breastfeeding. None of the professionals can give me any definitive answers and im beside myself now. Thank you for all your advice and support. From one stressed out mummy! Sad

We are booked in tomorrow to see a cranial osteopath also.

Back to paediatrician, I would say. Definitely not a disaster if you do switch to formula and don't feel like it is!
