Teething

hi,

i know this is a topic for health but i would like to hear the opinion and stories of the crowd that hangs in this thread.

my DD is now 17 weeks old and has been teething for 4 weeks. the HV spotted one 'bud' on each side of her upper gum.

my question is... when are they actually going to come out? is it possible that she has more than those 2 trying to come out? it just seems sooooo loooong 4 weeks of teething without any pearl on sight. what is your experience on it?

(yes, lots of sleepless nights... i want a breaaaaaak)

Ummm...you aren't going to like this.

DD got her first tooth at 14 weeks after about three weeks of teething. Then for six weeks she got one a fortnight. So we had pretty much consistent teething for quite a while. Then it stopped (hurrah)

Then at 12 months it started again. Apparently it's raining molars for christmas!

I suggest you try Nurofen for children, works better than calpol and doesn't taste horrid (get the orange one) and don't skimp on the teething gel and frozen flannels.

Good luck.

arrrrrgh [jabuti runs for the hill]

who, so your DD was teething for like what, 2 whole months? we seem to be heading that way.

thank you for the medicine advice, we have been using capol. i feel worried about giving her medicine every night. how did you do it?

My now 2yo daughter seemed to be teething for forever!! I think she started as young as 2 months, but was over 8 months old before she got her first tooth! It wasn't as bad as the teething she went through at 12+ months (getting molars) but she did seem to be suffering from a sore mouth for a very long time!

Hope your little one is feeling better soon! I always felt so helpless when Abigail would say with tears "My mouth hurts!"

whomovedmychocolate · 19/11/2007 20:57

Umm nine weeks, so yes that's just over two months. The molars have been going for six weeks so far. There are four more to come. Ironically she hasn't got her canines yet which are the easiest apparently

Don't worry about giving them medicine every day (I did but then I spoke to the doctor). Apparently the way to do it is to switch between ibuprofen and paracetamol every three days to avoid build up. Although it's fine to continuously feed them either, but it may not work so well.

Also, look into something called Medised. When DD is so knackered from screaming all night, it's a painkiller (paracetamol based) with a decongestent which knocks them out a bit. Last thing at night, it can be wonderful (although we use it very sparingly).

fonzerella · 19/11/2007 21:03

Medised... the nectar of the gods!! After 3 weeks of teething has helped all three of us have some sleep! Don't worry too much about medicating... think how grateful you would be if it were your mouth that hurt! Good luck!

dd666 · 19/11/2007 21:13

oh im not all that lucky as only most of them came through with just the grumps she currently cutting back teeth 4 of them and they giving her greif been 3months and still no sign of them

whomovedmychocolate · 19/11/2007 21:15

The worst bit for us is when you try and have a close look at the lumps and get a bit gouged out of your finger for your trouble

At least she doesn't dribble though.

jabuti · 19/11/2007 22:05

ah, wonderful notes here! and thats a good argument... yes, i would take ALL the medicine in the world if i was teething, which i did, but i cant remember anymore

and i hadnt thought about it, but it will be really sad when she can speak and say it hurts!

i made her cry the other day when i touched one of her 'buds' by accident, poor little thing! no bites yet...
