Probably stupid question about formula feeding

Ds is 6 months in mid June.

Why is follow on milk needed, when breast milk obviously wouldn’t require a different drink? Sorry if that’s a daft question.

It isn’t needed at all as PP said it’s only around because formula companies aren’t allowed to advertise new born formula milk.

BrokenLink · 05/06/2021 20:29

It is not needed. It was created by formula milk companies to by-pass government restrictions on advertising breast milk substitutes (aka formula milk). It is actually illegal to advertise formula milk on TV. So they created a product designed to follow on from breastfeeding and made it look virtually identical to their cans
of "first milk". They have images of babies looking younger than 6 months old drinking the product in the adverts and this indirectly markets breast milk substitutes to new parents. It's quite sneaky but it clearly works or the wouldn't do it. Health professionals recommend first milk for the whole of the first year. Then whole cows milk.

Yes - I know all that, thanks, I mean, is it any different, in other words, can ds continue to have his first infant milk beyond six months?

Yes continue with first milk until one and then just switch to cows milk ...it’s a marketing ploy the next stage crap

Yes you can continue with first milk. I switched to follow on at about 9 months as it was cheaper and you could get offers on it

Breast milk changes to continually meet a baby's needs as it gets older. I would think that follow on milk is aimed at mimicking that.

BlueDucky · 05/06/2021 20:45

Yes, I switched to follow on as often on offer. Also I think some brands have more iron in the follow on milk but worth checking the info on the boxes.

lavenderandwisteria · 05/06/2021 20:47

Thanks for that Smile

Breastmilk does change to meet a baby's needs.

Regardless of that follow on milk isn't needed.

Health visitor advised us to stay on the first milk. Apparently the second has slightly more iron in it. I think some people change as it's slightly cheaper in some places and you can get club card/boots points on it (which you can't for first milk)
