Infant feeding

Is it too late to improve latch in 3mo?

Hi,

I've had this awkward sore spot on left nip for about 3 weeks - not getting worse but not improving either. Done the old Lansinoh, silverettes, fresh air options, and probably ruled out thrush (have had it before and BF counsellor didn't think so on phone)

I've got a sort of skin tag which seems to be the sore spot and it started about the same time as blocked duct - looked and looked for signs of milk blister but none to be found. Blocked duct now resolved...

So now think it was probably damage caused by a lazy in-bed feed one night, and also conscious that he's a bit lower down on that side so have to hold him up more when feeding in my arms...

He's a pretty fussy, wriggly feeder anyway and often pulls off that side himself (with a pop -ooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuucccchhh!) but not the other one, oddly...

so is it too late to try and teach him to latch on better? He does have a dummy but I'm reluctant to remove that cold turkey now since he's a VERY sucky baby (who was never happy sucking on me all the time since the milk kept coming and he'd get very cross) and he's reliant on it.

I do try to get him to open his mouth really wide but sometimes he sort of slips off and the end of the nipple gets sort of underneath or clicked by his tongue (IYKWIM)

Any advice I can use to, er, retrain him?

Thanks

IKWYM. My DS2 is 5 months and he still definitely prefers one side. It's the first side I put him on after he was born. Not sure if that's why?
Could you try to feed just on one side for a while? I do bra fittings and one lady I fitted only fed on one side all the time. It didn't make her "uneven" in size and she got on fine. Then you could go back once it's not sore.

my dd was a bit like this, but it wasn't sore so i used to let her get on with it. then i started getting bad blocked ducts and soreness at about 12-13 weeks. i just kept taking her off when she got clucky with my nipple and re-latching her. It took a week or so, but she did get the hang of it and now her latch is spot on. good luck!
