Re repeatedly boiled water

Does anybody know why we're not supposed to make up formula with repeatedly boiled water? I would like to know because occasionally I have used water that has been reboiled in the kettle. Thanks.

I have a vague idea that repeatedly boiling it increases the sodium levels??? Maybe I just imagined it though.....

acnebride · 03/11/2004 20:58

i asked this at a baby group once and several people told me that it's because the repeated boiling increases the proportion of sodium in the water.

no worries tho, i'm sure we've all occasionally used reboiled water. well ok, most of us!

Have a vague memory it's something to do with repeatedly boiling changes the concentration of minerals in the water? Or something to do with oxygen? Sorry, not much help, but it is the standard advice.

Unless water is distilled it always has a small amount of mineral salts disolved in it. Every time you boi water, steam is given off, so water is 'lost'. That makes the water that is left more concentrated in terms of the minerals present. You havn't added more minerals, you have taken away water, so the overall effect is the same IYSWIM.

Thanks! Makes sense. I'm glad I find out because now I don't have to worry about using re-boiled water once in a while. I think the amount of water evaporated with a kettle is not that great so I don't have to worry about it too much. It will only be a problem if I'm boiling water in a saucepan for ages and greatly reducing the volume.
