10 month old food obsessed?

Hello,
My son is 10 months and has become obsessed with food to the point that every mealtime ends in a meltdown. I have tried searching online for how to stop your baby crying during feeding but all the topics relate to babies who don’t want the food or don’t like being fed for some reason. My son loves his food to the point where he cannot get enough. When he sees the bowl coming to an end he screams and screams. When I’m preparing his food he sits in his high chair banging his palm on the tray because the food isn’t in front of him (I read: I’m not doing it quick enough). If he sees food he starts crying, if he’s not immediately eating it. If i take him down the baby isle at the supermarket and you don’t leave with his favourite snacks he starts crying. If he hears me opening a packet of anything his little head immediately swivels round to find source of sound and contents of packet.
If he has finger food he devours it. If I am feeding him there is barely a rest before he leans forward for another mouthful.
Mealtimes will always end one way. Him throwing back his head and crying and crying because it’s over.

He’s about 11kg and crawling.
Any tips?
Would love a mealtime that ends in a smile.

See your HV and tell them, is he on a much higher percentile for weight than height? If you give him more food is he eating until he's sick or something or are you restricting his amounts?
Without any backstory I'd just feed him until he's finished, as long as he's taking milk still he should be fine. Is he a very big baby, what milk feeds is he on?

Ours is a bit like that; I just put fruit on his tray so he can munch on that whilst I prep food for him.

Nursery feed him in much shorter intervals so I think he’s used to little and often rather than larger and less times throughout the day.

Does he gets snacks?

I usually go by time, if it’s been more than 2 hours I’ll offer something. I can’t force feed him and it’s almost always something healthy so if he eats it he must be hungry.

How does the meal end, does he finish the plate or does he stop when full?

I give my DD something little and often just to keep her topped up - she’s 12 months and crawling and cruising so burns it off quickly (although she’s tiny, about 9kg). Would feeding little and often help?

Also, does he drink enough milk/water? I’ve read somewhere before that thirst can be mistaken for hunger (in everyone).

He is on 95th percentile for weight. I don’t measure his height. I have rarely seen him stop eating because he is full. It’s amazing how much food he can go through. I don’t feed him many snacks because he won’t have just one or two of anything. If you give him a rice cake he will want the whole packet, and snacks become traumatic for me and just tears for him. I give him 210ml-360ml (7-12oz) of milk on average a day.
I struggle to put the bib on him because as soon as he is in high chair he knows food his coming and he starts crying and waving his arms around. What is going on?

You do need to measure his height too because a baby who is on a similar percentile for height is less of a worry than a baby on the 25th for height and 95th for weight for example. See your HV or GP, they can help you far more than we can!

Between 10-12 months they need around 400ml per day, maybe try upping his milk slightly to see if that helps?

TwinMum35 · 29/05/2021 15:01

I would feed responsively and look at your baby’s cues 💐

He’s telling you he’s very hungry at the start of meals and he still feels hungry at the end.

Bigger bodies require more fuel. I would offer him more calorie dense foods, more frequently throughout the day. He should probably still be offered a bit more milk than that x

I don’t think it’s possible to over feed a baby of this age unless there is an underlying health issue.

How long has he been like this?

BunnyRuddington · 01/06/2021 09:28

He's a little under for the milk, at this age if you're not BFing, he should be having 400 ml of first stage formula a day. I'd try upping his milk to this for a few days. I'd also measure his height as weight centiles are petty meaningless without height centiles.

BunnyRuddington · 01/06/2021 10:13

This guide from the Caroline Walker Trust might help as well as it gives sample menus for a 10 month old and suggested portion sizes.

I really would measure him though, if he's anything like my DN who is on the 98th centile for both weight and height, they require more calories than smaller babies.

He seems obsessed with processed food so artificially engineered food, more than food itself, since even hearing the noise of package will send him nuts.
If he goes wild in the baby food aisle if you don't grab his snack, avoid the aisle, or if you must, grab the snack, and then abandon it before reaching the till.

There is food and then what is food-like subtances, ultra-processed with no nutritional value despite health claims on packet such as rice cakes or other snacks.
