Tongue tie division - when did you see improvement

Ds2 had posterior TT cut on Thursday at 4 weeks. We didn't have painful feeds but he did struggle to get milk from me, I needed to keep him awake and actively transfer the milk with switch feeding and breast compressions, he also rejected a deep latch and had gaps around his latch and took on a lot of air. He had been feeding every 90 mins day and night with up to 4 hrs of cluster feeds. We had second session of cranial osteopathy on Friday (one day after) cut.

After TT -
I saw he could open his mouth wider instantly. On Friday i saw he was holding his tongue on the roof of his mouth. On Saturday I felt he may have been using his tongue differently in one feed. No change to frequency of feeds or length of feeds, if anything he is feeding more, including up to 6hr feed sessions. In the last day feeds have become painful. He is clamping down on my nipples. I have had on ave 1 hr of broken sleep a night.

My question is, this has got worse, but could it get better?

Ahhh yes. I have had 3x TT divisions carried out on 2x babies. Each time it took maybe up to a week to see the full benefit. In fact, I found the first fairy distressing because in the first couple of days after things were very much worse, but they did improve.

The advice is that it can take between 2 and 4 weeks to get complete improvement and yes, it can often get worse before it gets better! Some do see improvement before this of course, but rest assured that if it doesn't improve as quickly as the above poster, for example, that's completely normal. Babies have to relearn how to use their tongue and their new tongue feels strange and heavy in their mouth! Keep persevering.... It is worth the patience and effort in the end!

P. S. A brilliant position to use to work on his latch would be biological nurturing/laid back breastfeeding, especially using lots of skin to skin. It encourages babies to use their newborn reflexes to seek and find the nipple and it helps them get a really good, deep latch x

I’d say my baby took about 2 weeks, had it done at 7 weeks old

My newborn had TT cut at 9 days, but she still has a high palate 7 weeks later so it can take time.

Definitely contact your local La Leche League, they've been invaluable with me!

ps im using a Haaka Supplemental Nursing System once or twice a day too, it's helping.

Thanks everyone. Gives me hope things may still improve!
