I don't know either. What do you mean exactly? Who told you?

HaveYourselfaNortyLittleXmas · 16/11/2007 21:37

They can - who told you they can't?

hunkermunker · 16/11/2007 21:38

Hang on, I'll find a link.

expatinscotland · 16/11/2007 21:38

mine did!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 16/11/2007 21:39

DS2 did too - didn't seem to do him any harm (but then don't all us FF'ers say that )

THelesbellsRINGOUTFORCHRISTMAS · 16/11/2007 21:39

its not sterile is what ive always been told

you need hunker

underwire · 16/11/2007 21:39

I thought they could, as long as you use the ones suitable from birth, not the step up ones.

expatinscotland · 16/11/2007 21:40

my two are still here!

We have just been told by our MW that they can have powdered formula but you CANNOT reheat it ie: in the microwave. You can use it with freshly boiled water that has been cooled down. Apparently there is research to show that reheating can cause meningitis and/or another illness(damn I've forgotten which one)!!

I hope this makes sense.

MerlinsBeard · 16/11/2007 21:41

as far as i know (DISCLAIMER - I am NOT a profesional in anything) its a ploy to make you spend more on ready made stuff

underwire · 16/11/2007 21:41

I never knew that bells, learn something new every day!

BTW my first 3 (eldest born 2002) all had formula when they were tiny, and they've been fine!

Every year 'the professionals' come out with something new just to confuse us all!!

underwire · 16/11/2007 21:42

Dont know how it could cause meningitis, that is caused by a specific bacteria isnt it?

HaveYourselfaNortyLittleXmas · 16/11/2007 21:42

They CAN have it....I make up all my bottles in advance (a days worth) made up with hot boiled water, cooled down in a bowl of cold water and kept in the fridge. My DD seems to be ok after 6 months of doing this despite a slight variation on the rules (making up fresh each time....WTF?)

expatinscotland · 16/11/2007 21:43

i did the same, have.

HaveYourselfaNortyLittleXmas · 16/11/2007 21:44

I always re-heat my milk in the microwave and give it a good shake....and DD is still here to tell the tale......

mrsjetson · 16/11/2007 21:48

MW is paying a visit tomorrow I'll ask her for the full info then...

hunkermunker · 16/11/2007 21:51

See here for more info

HaveYourselfaNortyLittleXmas · 16/11/2007 21:51

You'll just get the standard Dept of Health / WHO stuff from the MW.....ours wouldn't even discuss it...just gave me a leaflet....they certainly know how to make you feel guilty and put just that bit more pressure on you ....

hunkermunker · 16/11/2007 21:52

See here for current formula preparation guidelines

hunkermunker · 16/11/2007 21:52

HYANLX, what pressure and what guilt? For not bfing or for not following formula preparation guidelines?

NoBiggy · 16/11/2007 21:52

"New" advice when I was expecting DD2 (who is only just over 1 btw) was to make it with hot water (ie freshly boiled and cooled a bit), then cool it down quickly. If you wanted to take a bottle out you were to take your prepared cooled bottle in an insulated bag (and presumably then heat it in a microwave or in hot water or a warmer or whatever). You were not to take out the boiled water and powder and mix them later. Is that at odds with what MrsJetson has been told?

There's supposed to be an issue with heating the plastic bottles too isn't there .

HaveYourselfaNortyLittleXmas · 16/11/2007 21:54

For not bfing....I use my common sense (I am a scientist) for making up formula

LucyLasticBand · 16/11/2007 21:54

stand bottle in boilign water to warm through i thought. because of hot spots
