Ready made formula out of stock

Does anyone know why ready made formula (aptamil, cow and gate) is out of stock everywhere? Online retailers are out of stock, and they have ran out in all the supermarkets, boots etc near me.
My newborn is 3 weeks old (first baby) so this is my first time using formula (unable to breastfeed as he won't latch) Pumping like crazy to try and feed him, but still need formula. Is this a common thing for supermarkets to run out of ready made formula?

It's not common in usual times. Lots of items ending up out of stock just now. Dont know if it's covid or brexit related or a mix of both

BingBongToTheMoon · 11/05/2021 19:04

Why not just buy powder and make it up?

SmileyClare · 11/05/2021 19:07

Do you mean the ready made liquid formula? You can buy tins in powder form and make it up yourself at home? If you've been bottle feeding then it's going to be very difficult to produce enough by expressing breast milk now.

All supermarkets stock powder formula.

A few weeks ago sma wysoy was recalled and out of stock and it caused people a lot of issues now standard ready made formula too 😞 it’s not good enough really is it a lot of babies can only tolerate ready made

Hopefully it’s back soon and in the meantime fingers crossed powder works out for those that need to switch

Lemonelderflower · 11/05/2021 19:07

She might want to leave the house occasionally Hmm

R.e. the powdered milk: don't worry about needing specialised sterilising equipment. You can make the bottles up with cooled boiled water from the kettle and use your usual sterilised bottles.

No you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT do this for a newborn

The powder must be mixed with boiling water, because the powder isn’t sterile, so the boiling temperature kills off bugs which could make the baby ill

This might be ok for older babies but it beyond stupid for a newborn

Is it any wonder bottle fed babies get D&V at such higher rates when advice like this is given out Angry

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 11/05/2021 19:14

You can leave the house with powdered formula. What do you think people did before ready made was readily available?!

Very few babies truly cannot tolerate powdered, it's the same stuff.

You can make up a bottle of formula when out and about, it's not too tricky to add some powder to a bottle of boiled water, or just take one with you that's been prepared at home?
brokengate · 11/05/2021 19:21

Agree re getting into powder for home.

Amazon for liquid, yes there has been a shortage but mine dispatched today and it's in stock for delivery early next week now. That's cow and gate.

SmileyClare · 11/05/2021 19:22

The powder must be mixed with boiling water Yes sorry for the wrong advice. It should be made with boiling water. I should know this having formula fed my own children. Blush

Obviously, the best advice is to follow the instructions on the tin! I was really just trying to reassure the Op that it's fairly straightforward to make up formula milk yourself at home.

I don't advise trying desperately to express milk whilst waiting for the shops to re stock.

StooriMidori · 11/05/2021 19:35

The advice is to make powdered formula in boiled water cooled to approx 70 degrees. If you boil the kettle and leave it for 20 minutes it cools to around this temp.

Bit strange that the ready to feed are out of stock. Hopefully not a long term issue.

whyhell0there · 11/05/2021 19:39

This may seem obvious and apologies if you've already done so, but have you had a look in corner shops? Sometimes they have a small supply & aren't usually people's first port of call.

StooriMidori · 11/05/2021 20:28

Good point @whyhell0there I've seen the little ready to feed bottles in petrol stations too.

SmileyClare · 11/05/2021 21:33

I still think it would be sensible to have a large tin of powdered milk at home, even just as a back up. It's far more cost effective too.

If you have an Asda Living store near you try there, they had loads when I went in ours today
