Hi horseymum

We had some success with the doidy cup when DD was 4 months (after many unsuccessful battles with a huge vaiety of bottles, teats etc). But she regressed when she started nursery at 6 months (I think it was too much change) and even at one year (today!) she still won't take more than a couple of ounces.

Don't want to put you off. I'd say make sure DH does those occasional feeds - I think where we went wrong was just letting her get used to the cup from me. So when anyone else tried to feed her, she got upset.

Good luck.

Hi Horseymum and O'Cat. This is so weird because I was trawling Mnet this weekend gone for ideas and support. I could not find much so posted something on Saturday. We have been so distressed. Have a DS started refusing bottle with EBM at 5mths. Was fine before this. I had to go back to work when DS was 2 mths. DS was not confused between BF and bottle and everything was hunky dory until a couple of weeks ago. GM and DH are using doidy cup. (Much spillage but he is starting to get it slowly). We also have a free flowing beaker with concave lid with a little hole for the EBM to flow. This was given by SureStart and made by Tommee Tippee. Has markings on the side for 10 percent and 100 percent (dilution of juices)Less spillage but DS needs a different technique as milk can go up his nose. He is slightly dehydrated. Nappies not as wet and poos not as heavy. I am concerned. He takes an ounce but sceams after. HV said pour a little into his mouth during the screams when his mouth is open. Our HV says we have to persevere. His weight has dropped a centile in last 4 weeks. Has baby rice and will turn 6months in 2 weeks. Starting on the semi solids then.

It is hard. All we can do is try. Maybe you have SureStart/ Early Start in your area. Also we saw a nutritionist who gave us a load of advice. HV has seen DS twice this week and also to reassure us. Feeding problems apparently also occur later on with the weaning and after. It's just part of DS development.

Stay calm, try the cups and spooning and also talk to health profs in your area. Feel the fontanelles of DD. If really sunken and she is floppy with dry nappies etc I would take her to hospital. That is what we have been warned to look out for because this indicates severe dehydration.

Please reply back because I know how hard it is since I and DS are going through it now.

Good luck and stay calm.

Hi again. My DH wrote the message above using my account. The one thing that I would add is ... I know that feeling you get when you have to throw away any EBM. The thing that you need to remember about using any cup or bottle is that your DD has to learn new skill which is totally different to BF. Therefore you will need to spend a little trying out the cup before you decide that it is in appropriate. The Health Visitor also told us to only give the EBM in very small amount 1/2-1 1/2oz each time. Another tip we were given was to give the cup to our DS to play with so that he can get used to it. It seems to work - only now he can get a bit upset when he realizes that there isn't any milk in the cup. the cup will then usually end up on the floor.
