Milk pouring from sons mouth

13 replies

My son is 4 weeks old and bottle fed from birth. When he's feeding the milk is a steady stream flowing out of his mouth so I'm not sure exactly how much of the bottle he is taking.
He had tongue tie but got it divided 2 weeks ago, since then the milk is still coming out but not as much as before

Has anyone got any advice to stop/help this? Sometimes he feeds great and very little to none comes out but I'm not sure what I have done differently at these times

What brand of teat is it?
Some are more flexible than others

Mammymar · 21/04/2021 15:35

The flow on the teat could be too much for him. He might need a slower flow.

Tommee tippee closer to nature

He was the same with the disposable teats (nuk brand I think) that you are given in the hospital.

I did mention to the midwife at the time but wasn't concerned also mentioned to my HV who was of the same opinion and this is why we chose to go private to divide his tongue tie

@Mammymar he's on the slowest teat

Is he gulping the milk? Would giving him more breaks whilst feeding help? Flowers

alexio · 21/04/2021 18:14

@Mammymar
no he's not gulping it down Confused I usually burp him twice during feeds because he can be difficult to burp if left till the end.

I'm wondering if his tongue is still trying to get used to being freed after the division. I don't know

Did you get shown the exercises to do with his tongue after the division to prevent it reattaching? It can take some time for them to get used to using their tongue properly.

alexio · 21/04/2021 18:24

@PragmaticWench yeah I did and we've been doing them. I'm hoping it's just because it's still a new sensation to him having full use. He is taking his dummy better than before and latching on to the bottle quicker also.

Maybe I'm just overthinking it and thinking it should have changed overnight

It's fine to think about these things lots, your baby feeding is your mind's priority right now and it shows you're a good parent!

If you're concerned then I think you absolutely could call the person who did the division to ask if this sounds normal. I have read some babies take a while to completely improve but asking can't hurt.

My DS couldn’t get on with Tommie tippee bottles at all, he just wouldn’t drink from them. Do you have anyone else you could borrow a bottle from to try a different brand?

INeedNewShoes · 21/04/2021 18:57

We had the same problem with the Tommy tippee closer to nature bottles!

MAM bottles solved it immediately.

shouldistop · 21/04/2021 22:17

Try mam.

Ds2 had a tongue tie and the only dummy he could use was mam.

alexio · 22/04/2021 01:51

@shouldistop @INeedNewShoes

I've sent DH to Asda to get some mam bottles tonight, at the end of my rope with feeding the now it just seems to be pouring out and then he's wanting fed 2 hours or so later with lots of crying in between so he's no doubt sucking air in while feeding and getting colicky.

I appreciate all the advice
