Administering antibiotics for breastfed baby

Crackers1288 · 15/04/2021 03:30

My Ds is 9 days old and has been prescribed some oral antibiotics for a small finger infection (flucloxacillin)
I am breastfeeding him, and the doctor said just Express some milk to put it into, however I struggle to Express anyway, never mind three times a day for the next 5 days.
So does anyone know if theres another way? Maybe that doesnt involve bottles as we're really early days into the breastfeeding.
Or is this just something I'm going to have to suck up and try?
Thank you

Is it in liquid form? If so can you use a syringe to
Give it?
Aim for the cheek to avoid causing baby to cough/splutter/choke

And congratulations!

Thank you Smile
Yes it is in liquid form, I just wasnt sure if he was too small to do that but that would be a whole lot easier!

No not too small. The Doctor maybe thought it would make it easier to do it in expressed milk but I know what you mean about that making it more difficult!
Hope the wee finger is better soon!

A pharmacy should be able to give you an oral syringe for free.

Was coming on to say use a syringe. Normally when you buy Calpol at the pharmacy they offer a syringe so you could ask and I'm sure they'll be happy to help.
Just make sure you don't plunge it too fast as when they're new they can be a little stiff. Just slowly plunge it into baby's mouth towards the inside of the cheek a tiny bit at a time.

To be honest I am surprised that the pharmacy didn't ask if you wanted one when they gave you the prescription as they know how old your baby is.

Congratulations BTW

Thank you all for your replies, that's definitely going to make life easier.

If the syringe idea doesn’t work (Im sure it will), we give medicine to our baby on the end of a handle of a teaspoon. Have to do a few dips to get it all in but he’s quite happy to take it this way, he is a few weeks older though.

I always used the oral syringe. I then just squirted in in close to the back of their mouths which made them swallow.

Children's medicines are usually made as palatable as possible to increase the chances of young children taking them so most babies don't object to them too much.
