Reflux, Colic or.. Both?

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has any words of advice. I have a newborn who is just under 4 weeks old.

Last night was the worst night yet, he seems so uncomfortable and screams uncontrollably if laid down flat. This isn't a problem during the day as we keep him upright with us on the sofa, in his swing or car seat but obviously this isn't an option at night. We can lay him down after he's fallen asleep but within 30-40 minutes he will be screaming the house down.

His symptoms are as follows:

Bringing up milk
Being sick after feeding
Coughing during feeding
Hiccups during feeding
Difficult to burp
Firm tummy
Sneezing
Arching his back
Red in the face
Pulling his legs towards his chest when

I initially thought it was colic so have been giving him infacol since yesterday, trying to feed him less often but more oz and making extra effort to burp him. I think the feeding less often and patting him on the back for god knows how long has potentially now aggravated the symptoms and I'm wondering if it's reflux.

I've called 111 due to the yellow sick - I assumed this was yellow because of the formula but NHS says urgent apt if yellow sick Blush

Has anyone had similar? What did you found helped? It's soo awful seeing him so upset and in so much pain and also don't know how I'm going to cope when my partner goes back to work as I'm going to be living on literally zero sleep no exaggeration Sad

Yes some medical advice. Sounds like both to me, but then could be pyloric stenosis too (my eldest had it). How's the babies weight?

Yellow sick means they are empty so just bringing up bile. I'd definitely get them seen. Its not uncommon for babies to go through this but still best to be assessed.

@Newnamefor2021 I've never heard of that, I'll have a look into it.

Not sure about his weight as they hardly weigh them at the moment due to covid! He's been weighed twice, first he lost 100g and then put it back on and a tiny bit more.

The yellow sick was after feeding - would this still be because his stomach was empty or no?

Could be a cmpa both my babies had it and had all the symptoms you've said plus very runny nappies after every feed. They were put on Perscription formula and then fine.
They are now 2 and 1 year old and are both fine with normal cows milk they have outgrown their allergy

@wizzled we've not had any issues with runny poo yet! How do they get diagnosed with CMPA?

We are at the hospital now as 111 insisted on sending an ambulance as he has been wheezy. They have checked him over though and all fine. Hopefully get some answers from a doctor here.

Sounds like reflux and colic to me. I’d try feeding little and often rather than more and less often. With reflux they can’t really handle large amounts.

My DD had reflux really bad when she was small so I fed her little and often, winded her well and kept her upright for 30 minutes after a feed. Also cycled her legs at every nappy change.

Basically I just googled all my babies symptoms and cmpa came up. I spoke to the gp and told him I was thinking it maybe cmpa, so we decided to do a 4 week trial on Perscription formula and they were both a lot better and all symptoms went.
