Smelly teats!

Hi there,
We're using Tommee Tippee bottles and teats but after a few weeks of use they are starting to smell horrible. It's a hard smell to decribe but it's like a metallic smell.

Anyone had this before? Our DS doesn't care but I do!

We wash them in hot soapy water then sterilise them. We use the microwave to warm them - I wonder if that's why but can't see why that should be. I tried boiling them but the smell remains. They are made of silicone and therefore shouldn't smell at all.

teats shouldn't go in microwave, warm bottle only then put teat/lid on to shake.

officially you shouldn't really microwave milk anyway - aren't you meant to add hot water to the powder for formula, or warm in a jug of hot water for ebm?

I always put mine in microwave but shook lots before giving to baby. Now you're not even supposed to make bottles up and store in fridge, they've got to be made up as you go along. What's that all about???!!!!

Aren't you supposed to salt teats? Ie scrunch loads of salt in them to get rid of any residue.

I used to do this, and then rinse them manically, even when they were going in steriliser

MrsBadger · 11/11/2007 18:25

don't think you're meant to salt them these days

fizzbuzz · 11/11/2007 18:29

Hv told me to do it. Dd only 16 months old......

MrsBadger · 11/11/2007 18:31

bah - what do I know?

BritishBeef · 11/11/2007 18:37

We do add hot water to the formula as we make them up in advance and then refridgerate. I know that's not the guidelines nowadays but as most people made them up in advance before the latest guidelines, I know of no-one who knows anyone who had problems. I assume a few babies died due to illness as a result over the last 50 years but I imagine the chances are millions to 1.

you dont need to salt silicone teats but I think you do if they are made of latex. With dd (now 4) I used to make bottles in advance and warm them in the microwave to take the chill off (I did remove the top part though - ring, teat and lid, and then put it back on to shake). With ds (1) I just made the bottles up with boiled water and added powder when the feed was due. I never warmed them and ds had them at room temperature. This makes it a lot easier to feed when out and about too.

I have 4dc and made all bottles up and put in fridge. Heated either in jug of water or microwave. But if going in microwave you must remove teat and lid first. I used silicone and latex and never really had smelly teats so i tend to think its because you microwave the teats. i'm sure it used to tell you on the box of milk powder to never put teats in microwave.
