Breastfeeding after the newborn stage

Baby is 5-6 weeks old. She had long evening feeds then a short feed at around midnight. I’ve woken her at 5am because I was worried she hadn’t fed for a while. Should I have left her to sleep? When is it okay that it’s more than 2-3 hours between feeds?

I was told it’s fine to let them sleep overnight once they have re gained birth weight

She is quite a bit above birth weight now so I’m hoping that’s a good thing for longer sleeps!

When my DD was that age she was sleeping around 8 hours straight a night and I never woke her.
(Her sleep went downhill at about two months though and then I didn’t get any sleep for a few months!)

And yes mine slept a few 6-7hr stretches at that age.. but since then only goes 4 max

As said above...once they've gone back to birth weight, no need to wake for feeds. Enjoy the sleep!

If in a regular feeding routine, gaining weight and appears healthy I would wake after 7 hours overnight and enjoy some sleep if you can!

ShadierThanaPalmTree · 09/04/2021 07:24

My daughter was the same. Since around 7 weeks she has slept through the night everynight. The health visitor said that as long as she has exceeded her birth weight it's fine and you shouldn't wake them.

My DD is 7 months now, she sleeps for 10 hours every night, and more than makes up for the lack of milk when she wakes up! Grin

Yeah you're fine to leave overnight. In fact my second was slow to gain and even he was allowed to do one 6 hour stretch overnight to let me get some sleep according to my midwife. Enjoy!

I feel stupid for waking her now and I really hope she repeats the long sleep tonight. Fingers crossed.

Don't feel stupid! It's all a bit of a guessing game at first. Take care.

ShadierThanaPalmTree · 09/04/2021 16:30

Don't feel stupid, it is scary at first knowing what the right thing is to do, and you haven't caused any harm by waking her for a feed. Fingers crossed for you for tonight!

It's absolutely normal for even a newborn baby to have one longer stretch of sleep in any 24 hour period. If it happens at night, this is a huge bonus! Unless there is reason to worry about weight, vyou certainly don't need to wake them Smile.
