Unsettled baby - wind? Colic? Or just being a baby?

I had my second son 3 weeks ago. The first 2 weeks were a breeze, he fed easily, never needed winding and would just go down in his Moses or his crib and sleep happily until his next feed. At 2 weeks old he suddenly changed overnight. As soon as we put him down he would whinge and cry and even picking him up and cuddling him he still wriggles around as though he's really uncomfortable. During the night is the worst, it's not as bad during the day, but he goes down in his snuzpod next to me and within 5 mins he's grunting and moaning - the dummy helps sometimes but sometimes he either won't take it, or still grunts and moans and full on screams even with the dummy in. If I put him on my chest he will often settle that way, but I cant work out whether he is uncomfortable or just wants to be held.

My instinct says it's wind, or trapped wind so we started using infacol a week ago but seen little improvement. He falls asleep after almost every feed and is happy as larry whilst in my arms, if it was wind or colic would he be uncomfortable even while sleeping in my arms?

I try holding him upright and winding him after every feed but he RARELY brings up a burp, but he does fart a lot and gets hiccups constantly.

Does this sound like normal newborn behaviour or is the grunting and screaming a sign of something else? My first son wanted to be held a lot but this is a different story altogether. PLEASE HELP???

He is exclusively breastfed if it makes any difference?

We had this and still haven’t quite figured out what it was but we started giving her a probiotic because she was given IV antibiotics at birth which we were advised can wipe out the good bacteria they get from you in their gut... no idea if it was coincidence and she just grew out of it (she’s 9 weeks now) but it did seem to steadily improve from then. We forgot to give her them a couple of days last week and she was squirmy in her sleep again - again not sure if coincidence or not but no harm in trying from everything I’ve read. Hope you manage to sort it

It seems very normal behaviour for a newborn. After two or more weeks, vthe unsettled behaviour often begins and then starts to settle down again by about 8-12 weeks. Google The period of purple crying... It's very informative and reassuring. There are lots of theories about what causes the crying etc, but a strong theory is the baby's immature digestive system causing discomfort. Try lying your baby on his back on your knees and lifting his legs and gently peddling them or just gently pressing his knees into tummy, to help massage it. This always helps with my babies.

Generally though, babies of this age just want to be held all the time, including whilst sleeping, and be close to you. As you're breastfeeding, can you try cosleeping for a few weeks until he settles down?

P. S. By cosleeping, I mean feeding your baby in the side lying position and just leaving him in that position to sleep once he's finished.
