Can I take vitamin B6 when breastfeeding?

We are currently ttc no2 and I am still breastfeeding 2yo DS. I have been charting for a few months now and it seems that my luteal phase is now really short compared to before I had ds and I think this is why we have not had any success in almost a year of trying. I have read that breastfeeding can have this effect on the luteal phase and I have also read that vitamin B6 can help lengthen it. Any ideas how much of this I can take without risk to ds through the milk?

I'm getting a bit impatient waiting but am really really reluctant to wean ds as he still needs the comfort and closeness, as well as the milk of course. And I'm such a lazy arse, I don't want to deal with the hysterics it would cause if I denied him the beloved breasts.

Hmm, have googled some more and have read that vit b6 suppresses prolactin. That would explain why the luteal phase lengthens then.... I'm guessing cutting down feeds would have the same effect as the b6 but without any risks.

Anybody know anything more about this, or used vit b6 while feeding?

My GP recommended I take B6 to see if it helped my PMS. I didn't really trust her judgement about whether it was safe to take in the doses she recommended so rang up my LLL leader friend & she read out the relevant section from Hale's medications book...helped me make a properly informed decision.

Yes, I've heard that it can be taken for PMS terramum. I asked my LLL leader as well, but she said her book didn't say anything about vit B6 and that she would get back to me. So, did you take it in the end and did it affect your supply do you think?

I did take it but stuck to the max 25mg per day. Didn't have any effect on my supply, but didn't work either.

Do you know which book your LLL leader looked in? B6 is defo in the Hale one, not sure if it's listed under B6 or pyridoxine.

I'm not sure which book it was, we were MSNing at the time. It seems that 25mg is fine, but I have read that doses of around 100-200mgs are what is required to have any effect. Thanks for the links. I have googled and there are all sorts of answers ranging from don't take at all when breastfeeding right through to ok to take up to 200mgs. The other thing of course is that they just talk about nursing mothers and don't ever mention the age of the baby. Big difference between a newborn and my whopping 2yo

I bet that I get so confused over this that I just don't take any!!
