DS biting me, worried I'll have to stop BF but don't want to - help!

DS (10 mths) has started biting me really badly over the past few days, but today has been the worst. Just constant biting down on nipple and then pulling his head back - ouch! It's made me shout out a few times, and I've said 'no' in a serious voice, and stopped feeding him a few times, but he just laughs at me
I am now really worried that this signals the end of BF'ing him, which I really don't want, as it took a lot of effort at the start and I know a) how much he loves it and b) how good it is for him. What can I do? He is teething, but never did this last time he teethed. Just not sure I can stand the pain, and he isn't actually getting any milk. Feel very upset as I've just put him to bed and felt like that was one of the worst feeds ever, and normally it is a lovely time for us both

I had the same issue and did the same as Mommalove and it worked for us as well.

I found it seemed to be linked to teething in my DD and I also applied teething gel to her gums a few minutes before a feed. Seemed to help her.

Sadly, this happened to me, and I had no advice to hand so after a few weeks of trying to stop his latch and feed again, I stopped breastfeeding.
I really hope you get the advice you need.

My dd did this with the first bout of teething at 7 months. I shouted (uncontrollably) at her and stopped feeding. I had a miserable week or two with very sore nipples and blocked ducts from lack of feeding. However, she did get the message eventually.

If she is bothered with wind or constipation, or just now with her top teeth, she will gently bite whilst looking at me to see my reaction so I have warning that she feels like a chew. She knows that the answer will be NO and then decides to chew her fingers for a bit instead. Cheeky monkey.

I remember that horrible feeling after nasty feeds. It does resolve itself, honest.

Mine did this a couple of months ago at around 7 months. Think he was just getting used to the 6 teeth he seemed to get all at once!I also shouted (really hard not to!) but tried to suppress it if poss as didn't want him to go on strike.

It wasn't very nice as I also didn't want to give up and started to dread every feed. So I started to make sure he was hungry rather than just using it for comfort because I found if he was hungry he didn't bite.

Also started to focus on him when feeding again as I had got into the habit of whacking him on and letting him get on with it while I watched TV, read, MN'ed Then as soon as I could tell he'd finished I'd take him off rather than letting him 'play' as usual.

I read somewhere it takes them a while to adjust to new teeth so I found adjusting the latch helped a bit too.

Hope you find a way through it.

Thanks everyone, just fed him again and put him to bed and it wasn't too bad, think its because he was sleepy. However, when I was feeding him when I got in from work today it was just as bad as ever - I shouted at him to stop biting me and he buried his little face in my tummy Feel awful that I yelled but it just came out! He was ok after it but I felt like the worst mum ever I can't believe I actually yelled at him. I really hope this is just a very quick phase.

My DS did exactly the same at about 7 months, I found that when he was really hungry it was fine, but when he was tired, or when the milk supply had run out he would bite. It went on for a good few weeks but in the end he just stopped. Don't worry about the yelling, I used to give DS pretty short shrift too at times
