Can an IKEA Poang chair be used as a feeding chair?

Obviously anything can be used but are the Ikea poang chairs comfortable? Or are they too low?

I've come to realise nowhere in my house is very comfortable to feed so I thought that mumsnet could answer me.

I'm gonna say no. You need a comfy arm and the poang arms won't be pleasant to lean on.

Flamingolingo · 07/03/2021 18:13

Possibly but potential to bop baby on the head on the arm, and the lack of sides means all the random crap will fall out (muslins, nipple cream, etc). It’s common for breastfed babies to feed to sleep and catnap on you (especially at certain times of the day) so needs to be somewhere you can get stuck for a while.

SycamoreGap · 07/03/2021 18:14

I used one but had a v shaped pillow as well.

CosmicVagina · 07/03/2021 18:15

We used one as we already had it, I have to pile up cushions under my arms and it was still unsupportive.

It was also difficult to use for a 1-2 year old when reading books, I couldn't sit up, hold the baby and a book easily at the same time.

soundsystem · 07/03/2021 18:26

I'm going to go against the grain and say yes! I'm feeding my 1-year/old in one right now Grin

OhMrDarcy · 07/03/2021 18:31

I used one, years ago and it was fine provided I had a big furry throw over it to cushion the arms and stop things falling off.

TitusPullo · 07/03/2021 18:35

I read that to find a good feeding chair you should sit in one with a bundle weighing about 7lbs and try to get up without using your hands. Appreciate not possible to try things until shops open though! I did however find it hard to do this in a poang and it slopes back so much. And then the arms are not comfortable as others have said.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 07/03/2021 18:36

I did lots of bf in our Poang chair, used a v-pillow on the wooden arm. I'm fairly tall and I found it comfy.

smeerf · 07/03/2021 18:38

Yes I used one with DS1 with a pillow under my arm.

footprintsintheslow · 07/03/2021 18:45

So maybe yes if you already have one but don't bother going and buying one otherwise.

Not sure what to do as we have a small house and all the proper chairs seem massive

I have a wonderfully comfortable feeding chair that fits in DC2's very small bedroom! It was given to me by a friend though and I'm not sure where it was from. Didn't have one when DC1 was a baby but I'm so glad we have it this time around. Would have got one when I had DC1 if I'd known how handy it was.

FaintlyMacabre · 07/03/2021 18:58

I found that treating any chair as a ‘feeding chair’ was the best plan- in fact any horizontal surface! I think having a designated feeding place can make feeding more difficult-everything has to be just so before starting a feed. I would leave an assortment of pillows/cushions about (to put under your arm or the baby) and then you’re ready to feed wherever you happen to be. Once you’re both used to breastfeeding this will make life easier and more flexible.

We bought three Poang chairs to feed in different rooms in the house 😂 I used feeding cushions when they were small, I found the arms the right head to rest my elbows on! And they are comfy chairs to rock on when baby is sleeping on you. I would recommend the matching foot stool too :)

footprintsintheslow · 07/03/2021 20:45

I'm happy to feed anywhere and to get honest this is my third child that I've fed! So it's a bit late to think about a feeding chair. I'm just frustrated that no where is actually comfortable. We have two very comfy sofas but they are deep to sit in and low backs. The bed is very soft and the dining chairs are too hard.

I know I sound like bloody Goldilocks here.

They are comfy! Go for it :) they are also really easy to sell in on Facebook etc if you don't get on with it. Or for that matter you could pick up a cheap one second hand to try

footprintsintheslow · 07/03/2021 21:06

Yes well an immaculate one has come up on fb hence my question.

Yes! I had it after seeing it touted on here. Absolutely brilliant. Really comfy and rocks lightly

RedPandaMama · 07/03/2021 21:10

I used one for DD in 2017 - we breastfed for 14 months and loved it! Super comfy, not a rocker or glider but bouncy enough I could jiggle her to sleep and bounce a bit to keep myself awake and stop my limbs going numb! I did used to use a little pillow under my arm as she got heavier.

FGSWhatNow · 07/03/2021 23:56

I used one for 2 years with each DC, so it's a yes from me! I used a large pillow to support the baby and to provide some padding on the arm. I'm tall and found getting up and out of it with a sleeping baby wasn't the easiest (especialy when they got big) but I developed a sort of "shuffle forwards to the edge of the seat and then get up" method. They're quite low and reclined, and I'm tall, but it was manageable. So yeah, totally possible to use one. If it doesn't work for you, you can always re-post it on fb again.

ohwerehalfwaythere · 11/05/2021 07:52

Yes!! It's brilliant. The arms are quite low which is perfect. Couldn't recommend it more highly

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/05/2021 07:55

I can’t get out easily of our poang. What about the pello, they are less bouncy.

BertieBotts · 11/05/2021 07:56

They're really popular as feeding chairs but I don't like them, I find the movement makes me feel sick.

Medianoche · 11/05/2021 08:04

Poang worked fine for us. It’s a very personal thing though. One of my most comfortable was a big wide plastic chair, basically the exact opposite of what they sell as nursing chairs.
Also worth considering how easy it is to clean. I think most Poang covers are machine washable, but not sure.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 11/05/2021 08:15

Bought one when DD1 Was a few days old as nothing tin the house worked. Had a long cushion for between my arm and handle.

Feeding chairs are very personal.

Whoateallthechocolate · 11/05/2021 09:26

Yes! I started off with a fancy rocking nursing chair which cost £££ from John Lewis but found the Poang much more comfortable. Ended up with one in the sitting room and one in the bedroom.
