Bottles higher than 11oz

My baby keeps taking 11oz and still wants more... are there any bottles that hold more than this? We use TT. Also, does anyone else's baby drink this much? He's 4 months old. TIA.

I would be inclined to feed more frequently, rather than bigger amount.

Say feed 2 hourly - 6am 8am 10am 12pm 2pm 4pm 6pm 8pm 10pm 12pm. That's ten feeds a day. If you were giving 8oz per feed then if baby is having more than 80oz per day I would worry.

Is baby sicking up large amounts?

How many bottles do you give in 24h?

fussh · 06/03/2021 11:32

No he's not sick and feeds 4 times a day.

I also tried feeding 5 times a day and he wouldn't take it

@fussh

4 times in 24 hours? So no feeds at night?

You really need to start feeding more frequently, rather than bigger amounts.

44oz plus (4 feeds of 11oz) would be better given as 7 feeds of 7oz. You could fit that in as 2 hourly daytime feeds and none at night, or 3 hourly daytime feeds and a night feed or two.

How much is baby sleeping in the day? It is possible you might be mistaking tried crying for hunger crying.

fussh · 06/03/2021 12:10

He sleeps through and the GP said babies of his age feed 5 times in 24 hours so he's only dropped one feed.

OP posts:
fussh · 06/03/2021 12:11

And not sure he just naps when tired maybe 2 naps in between feeds lasting 15 min to an hour

OP posts:
DinosaurDiana · 06/03/2021 12:12

Can you move up to the next milk ?

fussh · 06/03/2021 12:12

Do you mean hungry baby? Or 6-12 month

@fussh

And not sure he just naps when tired maybe 2 naps in between feeds lasting 15 min to an hour
For context, I'd expect a 4 month old to be having about 3-5 hours of daytime sleep (and 10-12h at night). I'm a baby sleep consultant.

While all babies are different, an example routine for a 4 month old might be 2 hourly cycles of Wake > Feed > Short Nap:

7.00am Wake & Feed
8.15am Sleep
9.00am Wake & Feed
10.15am Sleep
11.00am Wake & Feed
12.15pm Sleep
1.00pm Wake & Feed
2.15pm Sleep
3.00pm Wake & Feed
4.15pm Sleep
5.00pm Wake & Feed
7.00pm Feed and Bed

6 feeds during the day (plus night feeds, if needed). 5 naps of 45 ish minutes = 3h 45

Another example would be fewer but longer daytime naps, for example:

7am Wake then Feed
9am Feed then Sleep
11am Wake then Feed
2pm Feed then Sleep
4pm Wake then Feed
6pm Feed
8pm Feed then Bed

This is 7 feeds a day and 4h of naps over two naps.

So it might be that when your baby is crying and you are assuming baby is crying because of hunger, infact baby is crying due to being very, very over tired and needing help to get to sleep.

fussh · 06/03/2021 13:24

I'll give that a go then and see how it goes thanks.

@fussh i would say he is ready to be weaned. Is he big for 4 months?

On doctors advice i weaned DS1at 4 months due to this, he was in 6-12 month clothes & taking 12oz every 3 hours.

But Op’s baby isn’t feeding every three hours. He’s only being fed four times per day which is inappropriate for his age.

Advising someone to wean because they have a big baby is absolute nonsense and irresponsible advice.

Siennabear · 08/03/2021 14:00

Weaning age is 6 months...
Try smaller more regular bottles. 11oz is way too much. Are you pace feeding?

Shazzzzz · 08/03/2021 15:45

@FlashesOfRage hardly irresponsible what a stupid comment.

I probably could of worded my lst comment better but cleary i did not advise her to do anything. my comment was based on a previous experience and doctors recommendation, anyone with a brian would take that as get advice from a doctor not act on what people have said on mumsnet!!

Also it is inappropriate to put this girl down saying her baby feeding is inappropriate when in fact you do not know that so what an irresponsible thing to say!!!!!!!

@Siennabear incorrect. not always 6 months. Her baby knows when he is hungry and what he needs to feel full, advising to split his bottles with less milk is stupid and will obviously not fulfil what he needs!

@fussh Please seek advice from your HV or doctor. How your baby is feeding may be correct for him and they will tell you that ☺️

Shazzzzz · 08/03/2021 18:04

Also reading my first comment which was just a quick one on mumsnet scrolling through i should of also stated that my son slept through the night so only had 4/5 bottles a day depending on how long he slept. Normally 10-12 hours. He is now 5.

whattg · 08/03/2021 18:58

@Shazzzzz Hey! Yes he is big he's nearly 18lb was born 10lb 4oz. I tried the feeding that the previous poster told me to do and to no success. He'd have under 3oz and wouldn't want any more. He doesn't drink 11oz everytime, just often. I'll definitely speak to my HV about it, she did tell me if he wants to feed 4 times a day then let him. It's just the amount he's feeding at a time that I'm worried about. But thanks for being so kind.

whattg · 08/03/2021 19:01

And I'm glad that your son fed the same as a baby. That gives me some reassurance, I felt like I was starving him for a moment! But you'd assume if he was hungry he'd wake so surely he's getting enough. He is gaining weight correctly. How it happened was the GP told me I might be feeding him too much!! He said try feeding him every 4 hours so he'd have 4 in the daytime and one at around 2-4am but he eventually dropped this bottle so it must mean he doesn't want it!

whattg · 08/03/2021 19:05

Name change sorry

Shazzzzz · 08/03/2021 21:57

@whattg my son was 9lb 8 but did grow very fast!

He was drinking 10oz at 3 months thats when i first seen the doctor and was advised to feed him what he wanted, if he still had plenty wet nappies and was pooing regular then there shouldnt be anything to worry about. He asked me to make an appointment for 4 weeks after for a follow up. When we next seen the doctor (4 months old) he was drinking 12oz bottles, thats when i was advised to start weaning as he was obviously very hungry and wasn't fully satisfied by milk (he would chew his fist constantly).

I started with the baby porridge for breakfast and gradually added different purées until he turned 6 months and then i lead weaned.

My DS2 is bigger than DS1, he was 9lb 6 a week early so would have been over 10lb full term, he is 3 months and is only drinking 5oz, he has 6 bottles in 24 hours.

All babies are different ☺️

whattg · 09/03/2021 07:00

They definitely are all different! If you don't mind me asking, after weaning, how much would your son take in a bottle and how often? I want to hold off as much as possible but he drinks so much.

Shazzzzz · 09/03/2021 13:03

@whattg 1st week we introduced dinner first so he would have a 12oz in the morning(this was around 9am, he was lazy!) dinner around 12pm, then 8oz 3pm, 6pm and 9pm. So this reduced his intake straight away by 12oz. I think the dinner really filled him up - this took a few days to adapt but once we had this routine thats how it played out.

Just so you know the doctor told me to feed solids first then 30 mins later see if he wants any milk, mine was never bothered about the milk after any meals.

Week 3 we introduced tea, so same morning 12oz, Dinner 12pm, 8oz at 3pm, 5pm tea, then 8pm 8oz (we loved this as gave us a really good happy hour until bed time at 9pm cause he wasnt hungry & grumpy ☺️

We waited until 6m to introduce breakfast & finger foods.

Also many people start with breakfast but as he was only 4 months (4months + 2 weeks to be exact) i was told to only feed when he is awake and alert, i found in the mornings he would still be really sleepy.

Sorry for the long post Blush
