Jelonet

My health visitor brought me some and I just want to check I am using it properly.

I cut it in to a wee square and put the bit with the guaze against my nipple. I then put on a breast pad to help keep it in place. I was going to keep it in the fridge too to make it nice and cold. Is that ok?

Not in the fridge, Stefka - you don't want it hard

What do the instructions say about the contact ?

Stefka · 02/11/2007 18:36

Nothing at all. I hadn't thought about it being hard - will take it out of the fridge.

Found this on a datasheet for Jelonet:
Method of use
Jelonet is applied directly to the surface of the wound and covered with an absorbent pad held in place with tape or a bandage, as appropriate.

Frequency of Change
The frequency of dressing changes will depend entirely upon the nature of the wound. If Jelonet is left in position for prolonged periods of time, it can become adherent and cause tissue damage upon removal.

Presentation
Jelonet is available in two forms: individually wrapped in an aluminium peel pouch, sterilised by irradiation; or packed in bulk in a tin, also sterilised by irradiation.
Storage

Jelonet should be stored in a cool place.

I remember Jelonet being a lifesaver when I was breastfeeding DS1 and had a toe-curlingly painful cracked nipple. Hope this helps.

I stored mine in the fridge - pre-cut into 1 or 2 inch squares but I wrapped the lot in foil first to keep it moist and then put that in a sandwich bag. It was good to put it on cold. I used a little bit of Lansinoh first also. And then I also put a breastpad on over the top (which I also put a dot of lansinoh on to stop too much of the vaseline being absorbed.

It didn't go hard but imagine if you left it to dry out it would.
Now I was interested in 'the bit with the gauze' since mine was only gauze, but it is stored in between two bits of sort of plasticky paper. What I did was take the first sheet of hard paper off, then use the other one to sort of slide the Jelonet over the nipple. The second bit of paper just sort of slides away. Then I smoothed the square right down over the nipple - it fits the shape quite well I found. hope this helps
Replace with new squares after each feed and GOOD LUCK! Hugs to you and hope each feed gets better and better!

Thanks I was using it wrong! I am such an ejit! I am taking both bits of paper off now - it is nice stuff and helps my nipples not to hurt so much in between feeds. I have had some good feeds and some bad ones. Don't seem to be able to be consistent with my latch yet. I hope that I can crack this soon.

Keep going Stefka - you're doing great... after a while you'll get the hang of the latch and the good feeds will start to add up till one day you'll realise it really isn't hurting any more. I got through by remembering that one feed was over and the next one had to be better: one step at a time as they say!

I found it still took a couple of days at least for the worst of the damage to heal but it got a little bit better each time. Keep working on the latch, fiddling a bit with the position till it feels right (don't be afraid to gently take him off if it's hurting - sliding your little finger in rather than pulling him off so a not to do any more damage)

It's great for both of you that you're getting some improvement and that you're working hard at it - it really will pay off soon
