Using alfamino allergy milk without consulting gp

Ds is 6 month. I’ve gone to topping up with 2 bottles of alfamino aa formula a day as well as bf.

History is : reflux from birth , colic, mucousy bloody nappies. I asked the HV was told ‘nappies are normal’.
Asked the gp and also told nappies are normal and as baby gaining weight don’t worry. Wouldn’t help.

I’ve had to keep a food diary and cut out things from my diet and finally got ds to feel better. During a call with HV when I mentioned this I got told it was unnecessary and that some of the excluded foods were unusual and what was I hoping to achieve ???

I’ve become exhausted and so got a good multi vitamins but decided actually I need a break so wanted to combi feed. Asked for some help from gp got told no as baby is fine so I got myself some milks to try (one hydrolysed and one soya) neither suited ds (made him v v sick) so have ended up buying alfamino as the gp won’t recognise any
problem. He likes it and has 2 5oz bottles a day.

Had mentioned this to the HV and this is apparently not ok. That it’s ‘self medicating’ ?? But it’s not as it’s available to buy ! And I’d tried to on numerous occasions get advice from a professional and I’ve just been told he’s fine.
So I feel quite angry - but I can’t see how this is going to do any harm as it contains all the nutrients plus I’m still bf and we will obviously be starting to wean soon too.

I haven’t done anything wrong have i ? 😞

I’d ask the GP to refer him to a paediatrician. My GP wouldn’t listen to me either so I asked for a referral and he done it. Might be worth a shot.

Personally don’t think you’ve done anything wrong, you’re just trying to do your best for your baby.

They said there’s no reason to - that he’s gaining weight and they think some of the ‘supposed’ allergens are ‘unusual’ and that nappies were ‘normal’ (they weren’t)

So I feel like I can’t keep going as they think things are fine when they aren’t so I’ve tried to deal with it but that’s not ok either o feel like I can’t win with them 🤦‍♀️

I feel for you- my DD was similar but weight gain was also poor so got referred to a paediatric dietician who confirmed dairy allergy and wrote to the GP to prescribe hypoallergenic milk.

If you can afford it, I'd try going privately to a paediatrician who can then write back to your GP? That's what I did as the first milk they prescribed wasn't agreeing with DD and GPs kept brushing her crying etc off as colic/"babies cry".

HVs were useless with me too btw. I told them at week 2 I suspected the allergy and they kept telling me DD was crying due to low milk supply and me starving her.

At the moment it’s not terrible at 10oz topping up a day but if we move to more or giving up bf I know I’m going to need a prescription I’m just not ready for the battle it seems like it’ll be 😞

Yes that’s a good idea about a private dr I will keep that in mind
