hi,

i've just started designing a new website for a breastfeedin support group that i'm involved in. it is by no means complete, but can you take a look at the layout and all that stuff for me, and tell me what you think? positive or negative comments wanted. what else would help you, what would you include? is it easy to navigate etc, etc.

www.handinhandbreastfeeding.co.uk

THANKS

Looks good! Love the breastfeeding mummies page

My suggestions from a quick skim through:

the yellow text is really hard to read....a darker colour would be easier on the eye.

I would personally prefer the map and breastfeeding community links to open in a new window.

Presumably the alternative help page will list all the UK bfing organisations?

IwansMam · 29/10/2007 13:03

Just had a quick skim and I love the basic layout. Agree with the pale colour comments of terramum. My personal preference would be not too many colours, but then I do a lot of web-surfing for work at which point I find too many colours irritating.

With my work hat on (I also deal with IP), make sure you have relevant permission to use photos if necessary. I noticed a copyright notice on one of the breastfeeding mummies photos. Sorry, anal I know.

GreatBigHairyMonsterlapin · 29/10/2007 13:03

I don't like the multicoloured logos, it looks a little childish - ie aimed at children not mothers. I agree with terramum that the font colour should be darker; I would stick to one colour as well. If you don't like black, a dark blue is easier to read but still nice on the eye.

I like the multicoloured hands as a logo - will that go up to the top in place of the pregnant lady? (cute image )

You've got a couple of typos on the Help ME page - "From here you will be able to get adivce on any aspect of breastfeeding or just get get more information regarding our services."

On FAQ - "Here you will ??? some of our frequently asked questions."

But in general it's great. And I really like that it is supporting PARENTS, not just mothers.

Thank you so much. Have made some changes. terra lie i said it is by no means finished and yes other help organisations with go on alternative help page. how do i get the links to open ion a seaparte window? its my first expereince of setting up a website and i;m a bit of a novice!

when you add your hyperlink, in the form you need to specify the target. So to open the map in a new window, you would put Click here for a map of our location

LOL, I should have used a shorter link!

GreatBigHairyMonsterlapin · 29/10/2007 16:11

the target="_blank" bit is what makes it open in a new window

FunkyGlassSlipupandyouredead · 29/10/2007 16:13

Looks good. Any way you can standardise the size of photos ? A personal bugbear of mine.

Also not sure I like purple text but I guess that is personal prefence.

Good for you,

SharpMolarBear · 29/10/2007 17:47

Hi, I like the site!
Just a couple of comments
Your page titles probably need to be a bit more descriptive, eg for handinhandbreastfeeding.co.uk/HPinfo.aspx I'd have something like "breastfeeding support - info from health professionals", maybe not that long but you get the idea
on the gallery page, i don't like the word "mummies" - personal opinion feel free to ignore
not sure why there are 2 help pages, that's a bit confusing
wish i lived nearer ramsgate!!

SharpMolarBear · 29/10/2007 17:48

oh and your sitemap could p[robably do with being more structured to reflect the structure of the site, you might just have not got round to that yet

bealcain · 30/10/2007 07:43

SMP - what would you have instead?

Hairy monster - i wont let me do it that or i'm doing it wrong. i added it to end on hyperlink exactly as written and it just said the page could not be displayed!

anyone that saw it before i made the colour chages - is it any better now?

OP posts:
SharpMolarBear · 30/10/2007 08:28

Instead of mummies? I don't know, sorry - useless I know! Would mums be any better?
Can you leave in the target="_blank" bit, and we might be able to figure out what's gone wrong?

GreatBigHairyMonsterlapin · 30/10/2007 09:05

The colours are much better, IMO.

Are you doing this through a template editor, or just coding the HTML?

With the map, your current code is

map of dumpton lane, ramsgate

so you just need to add a space before the first > but after the " and then paste in this bit: target="_blank"

blahblahLane,%20MARGATE%20(RAMSGATE),%20CT11" target="_blank">map of dumpton lane, ramsgate

With the site map, you have it alphabetically; it would probably be better to arrange it by section. SO:

Home
About Us

  • mission and objectives
  • our history
  • what we do
  • meet your peer supporters
  • Map/Location Events Corner Information Corner
  • by Health professionals
  • by mothers
  • other articles
  • Breastfeeding friendly places
  • Your Rights

etc etc

GreatBigHairyMonsterlapin · 30/10/2007 09:09

Ok DURR, I'm slow... I can see the problem. Look at the beginning of your link

terramum · 30/10/2007 15:48

Colours are much better! Nice & easy to read now!

Can I be nosy & ask what software you are using to build the site with?

bealcain · 30/10/2007 15:54

i have no idea! it's all part of the microsoft live office stuff. the basic package is free, so that's what we're starting out with.

glad you prefer it.

hairy, still having problems with bloody hyperlink....i shant let it get the better of me!

OP posts:
littlelaPainAndTorture · 31/10/2007 08:09

How do you insert the hyperlink?

bealcain · 31/10/2007 09:02

um highlight the words i want to be the link then click on the button and type in the location of where i want it to go. i tried what hairy said about 10 times and each time it came up in a new window but said page cannot be displayed

OP posts:
littlelaPainAndTorture · 31/10/2007 10:41

I am hairy - well, no I'm not! but I was masquerading under that name. It's littlelapin

OK, so first of all, try entering the link details only beginning with the www bit - so

www.multimap.com/maps/?hloc=GB|Dumpton%20Lane#t=l&map=51.34233,1.4221|17|4&loc=GB :51.34 47:1.42004:17|Dumpton%20Lane|Dumpton%20Lane,%20MARGATE%20(RAMSGATE),%20CT11"

If it doesn't give you the option to open link in new window, etc (that being what the target="_blank" bit does) then you will just have to leave it as opening in the same window. That target bit will only work if you are actually coding the page - trying to use it in the way you describe will break it, yes.

bealcain · 31/10/2007 10:55

lol i prefer hairy!

OP posts:
littlelaPainAndTorture · 31/10/2007 11:15

well, that's your own personal preference, I won't judge you for that

bealcain · 31/10/2007 11:18

i meant the name lol!!!!

think i will have to give up on a new window and all that! thanx for the help tho
